Most moms start to feel their babies move between 17-20 weeks of pregnancy and it’s pretty irregular at that point, mostly due to the baby’s size. As the pregnancy progresses though, the movements will get more regular as your baby grows. So usually between 26-28 weeks, the woman will start to notice regular movement. Once you get to the point of pregnancy where the baby’s starting to move more regularly like between 26-28 weeks, if you ever notice a decrease or a change in your baby’s movement, then stop what you’re doing, get rid of all distractions, lay down on your side and count each movement. If you’re getting 5 or less in an hour, that’s not enough. That’s actually a reason to go to the hospital and get checked out. So don’t let a whole day go on of not feeling your baby move as much as usual once you’re to that 26-28 week point and beyond. Now once your baby gets bigger, their movements may be less pronounced because they don’t have as much room to totally extend and flex their joints and their arms and their legs. So the movements because of this may not be as pronounced but anything counts so any little flutters, any little body rolls or moves that you feel count. So, again, if you’re getting 5 or less in an hour, that’s not enough and it’s a good reason to get checked out. We’re also huge believers of mother’s intuition on labor and delivery so if you ever feel like something’s wrong and you just feel like you want to get checked out, then please, we’d love to help you. Fetal movements are appreciated by a primi gravida during 18 – 20 weeks whereas a multigravida can appreciate it around 16 – 18 weeks. Healthy fetal movements usually maintains its rhythm. We explain to the patient the daily fetal movement count, that is 4 movements after breakfast, 4 movements after lunch and 4 movements after dinner. If the woman comes to us and tells us that I am not able to appreciate the fetal movements, then what should we do. Immediately we have to check with the Doppler whether we can hear the fetal heart sound. If the fetal heart sound is good, then the next test should be done immediately to look for its wellbeing. An ultrasound with Doppler is done to check for its well-being like a blood flow. But if the fetal heart sound is not hard with the Doppler, then we have to confirm whether there is intrauterine fetal death. The various reasons where the mother may be suffering with, which causes this absent fetal movements baby, pregnancy induced hypertension, abruptio placenta, placenta previa, true knots in the umbilical cord. Medical conditions high blood pressure, kidney disease, diabetes, anemia, heart lung disease, sexually transmitted diseases, certain toxic drugs. Fetal conditions are post period pregnancy, patient crossing the delivery date, Rh negative mother carrying a Rh positive baby, congenital anomalous baby. Iatrogenic conditions however the baby can die are injury to the fetus during amniocentesis, chorion villi biopsy, chordocentesis, intrauterine transfusions or road traffic accidents.
A lot of moms want to know if their babies are going to start moving less as the pregnancy progresses. And it makes sense that they would because their real estate is a little restricted as they grow larger and larger, but the number of times your baby moves throughout the day shouldn’t change as the pregnancy progresses but the quality of movement may change. In other words you might not see big alien kicks and punches, but you’ll feel body rolls, little tiny kicks and punches. So little movements count just like the big ones do. So again there may be a change in quality, but not quantity. After 26-28 weeks you should look for regular fetal movement throughout the day and if you ever notice a decrease or change from your norm, then get rid of all distractions because sometimes that’s why we don’t feel our baby move, we’re just thinking about other things. Lay down on your side because that will increase blood flow through the placenta and count every single movement. If you get 10 or less in 2 hours, or just not much the first, or still concerned then get checked out. Best case scenario is that you’re sent home with some peace of mind and that is priceless. However, every pregnancy is unique. There’s no set “correct” time to feel fetal movement, and you may feel flutters even earlier than 16 weeks or a little later than 22 weeks. As your pregnancy progresses and you reach your third trimester, you should feel your baby move regularly. That’s when you should begin to pay closer attention to your baby’s movements, because as your pregnancy continues, a sudden change in the amount of fetal movement may be a red flag that there is a problem.
You may start to feel these movements when you are 20 weeks pregnant. The movements grow stronger and more frequent as your baby grows. Fetal movements show that your unborn baby is getting the oxygen and nutrients he needs before birth. Fewer fetal movements may signal a problem with your baby’s health. Count fetal movements a few times a day throughout your third trimester, and report any sudden decreases to your doctor.
In all these cases, you should be able to perk things up with a snack, which usually rouses the baby. Decreased fetal movement is sometimes caused by a leak or rupture in the amniotic sac that surrounds the baby. People often refer to this phenomenon as a woman’s water breaking. Membrane rupture is a normal part of a full-term delivery, but when the fluids leak before a woman’s due date it is often a sign of trouble.
Once your baby’s head is engaged in your pelvis, he or she will be even less mobile. As long as you’re feeling regular movement (don’t forget to count those kicks), it’s less important what type of movement it is. It’s not just less vigorous movements that you’ll be feeling now that you’re in your third trimester, but also less frequent movement.
Usually, fetal distress results in decreased movement, but an increase in violent, frantic movement could also indicate that something is wrong. If your baby’s movement patterns change suddenly or drastically, call your doctor or midwife. You should feel your baby’s first movements, called “quickening,” between weeks 16 and 25 of your pregnancy. If this is your first pregnancy, you may not feel your baby move until closer to 25 weeks. If you are not feeling the baby move every day by 24 weeks notify your provider.
Movement Counts. I talk to all my expectant moms about the importance of tracking their baby’s movements, or kick counts. After 28 weeks, your baby should move at.
“Fetal movement increases throughout the day, peaks late in the evening between 9 p.m. and 1 a.m., and decreases in the middle of the night as maternal blood sugar levels fall.
List of related literature:
• decreased fetal movement at 24 weeks or more (It is normal for babies to be quiet for short periods of time, and sometimes the movements are smaller in the last month or so of pregnancy, when the baby is bigger and not able to stretch out well.
In the final weeks of pregnancy, your baby’s movements will be smoother and less noticeable than those jolting kicks in the second trimester (because your baby has less space to move around).
One way to prompt fetal movement if you haven’t noticed any all day is to lie down for an hour or two in the evening, preferably after a glass of milk, orange juice, or other snack.
It is perfectly normal for no movement to be felt for several days in the early part of pregnancy, but after 20 weeks absence of fetal movements should be investigated.
