9, 2016 (HealthDay News) The Zika virus has already been linked to serious birth defects in the brain, and now it looks as if the virus may also cause deformities of joints in the arms and legs of newborns, a new Brazilian study suggests. The condition called arthrogryposis causes multiple joints to be contracted or curved. Zika infection during pregnancy may cause limb joint deformities in the baby, experts now fear.

Brazilian researchers from Recife, the city at the centre of the Zika epidemic, describe seven. Gaby was the first baby born with Zika-related disabilities in her small town in Paraíba state. Carol held Gaby in her arms as she recounted the story of her pregnancy.

Zika is the first mosquito-borne virus to cause birth defects but other infections are known to cause similar damage –including rubella and cytomegalovirus. But Zika’s damage appears to be worse. Zika and Microcephaly.

Microcephaly is a birth defect in which a baby’s head is smaller than expected when compared to babies of the same sex and age. Babies with microcephaly often have smaller brains that might not have developed properly. Zika virus infection during pregnancy is a cause of microcephaly.

During pregnancy, a baby’s head grows because the baby’s brain grows. Experts fear that Zika infection experienced during gestation could cause deformed limbs in the baby. In the journal BMJ, seven questionable circumstances are described by Brazilian scientists from Recife, which is the city at the heart of the Zika epidemic.

  • It is so sad to see all of those children with microcephaly, and the burden the present to their parents. It is also so encouraging to see all of those mothers giving their babies everything they have to provide them the best lives possible. And the private doctor who cries because she is not able to treat all of the afflicted children in her area is just so heartbreaking. I hope going forward everyone gets all of the help they need.

  • There is no proven correlation between Zika and Microcephaly. Brazil has a tremendously messed up water supply due to decades of bad pesticide use which are linked to Microcephaly.

  • I have lived with mosquito for almost 13 years never heard of zika. I heard this virus in 2016.? that is shoking! I think that is man made virus then blamed the mosquito. for that virus.?

  • Oh,  the irony.  Texas loves to threaten to secede from the Union if things don’t go their way.  Government is too big and too bad!  Yet the governor had no problems calling and asking for federal funds when the Zika virus comes knocking on the back door.  Where do they think the money comes from, leprechauns?

  • Remember: 80 percent of those infected have no symptoms.

Prof. Amir Attaran reminded us: Nuno Faria of Oxford University suggested Zika was carried to Brazil by a single individual in 2013. And by early 2016, about 1.5 million people were infected.

One person with Zika + three years time = about 1.5 million people infected

Out of 500,000 visitors to the Rio Games expected in August (if they go ahead), let’s say 1/2 are men. Those men (1/4 million of them) will need to abstain from oral, vaginal, and anal sex for 6 months (or use condoms and hope they don’t break, etc). Pre-ejaculate also carries the virus.

Plus: men, women and children returning from Rio will need to use mosquito repellents to guard against local mosquitoes (which will peak in numbers in northern hemispheres) from acquiring and spreading it. A dozen species in Canada can carry and transmit it. The most effect products contain DEET and the latest recommendation is to use a 50 percent concentration of it (5 times more than children under 12 can tolerate).

Babies and pregnant women should not use DEET-containing products. In fact, Duke University’s Mohamed Abou-Donia found that frequent and prolonged DEET exposure led to diffuse brain cell death and behavioral changes, and concluded that humans should stay away from products containing it.

A developing fetus is vulnerable to Zika for the entire 9 months of pregnancy (not just the first trimester). Are women and children going to be able to quarantine themselves for 6 9 months? Are a 1/4 of a million men going to abstain from all forms of sex?

    Exactly.

Each baby born with microcephaly costs 1 to 2 million to treat. People with microcephaly may have problems including seizures, intellectual disability, trouble walking or standing, or difficulty speaking or swallowing. Some also have hearing or vision problems. Children and adults can suffer paralysis and even death.

  • Remember thalidomide, humans pissing around with nature, we will never learn, everything we live with concerning nature has took billions of years to make, man comes along genetically alters something and hey presto.

  • Prophet Muhammad, mentioned this long time ago. He said it will come a diseases that no one heard it before., that means this is a sign of the day of judgement. coming closer,. long time ago people didn’t know Aids/Hiv/ Ebola/ Zika..

  • This is some scary shit. Everyone hold off on getting pregnant for 3 years, or until we’ve got vaccine.
Kick this piece of shit virus’s microscopic ass docs. You can do it.
