WebMD explains the basics of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), including theories about its causes. What causes IBS? stressful or difficult early life events, such as physical or sexual abuse certain mental disorders, such as depression NIH external link, anxiety NIH external link, and somatic symptom bacterial infections in your digestive tract small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, an. While there are several things known to trigger IBS symptoms, experts don’t know what causes the condition.

Studies suggest that the colon gets hypersensitive, overreacting to mild stimulation. The varied possible causes make IBS difficult to prevent. The physical processes involved in IBS can also vary, but may consist of: slowed or spastic movements of the colon, causing painful cramping. The exact cause of irritable bowel syndrome is unknown.

It is believed to be due to a number of factors, including alteration in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract motility, abnormal nervous system signals, increased sensitivity to pain, and food intolerances. The following are risk factors thought to cause IB. Sugar may be one trigger for IBS-C symptoms, but this is a separate condition from CSID. IBS itself isn’t caused by the lack of digestive enzymes seen in CSID.

Different factors may cause IBS in different children. Functional gastrointestinal (GI) disorders such as IBS are problems with brain-gut interaction—how the brain and gut work together. Experts think that problems with brain-gut interaction may affect how the body works and cause IBS symptoms. The causes of IBS are not clear.

Theories include combinations of gut–brain axis problems, gut motility disorders, pain sensitivity, infections including small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, neurotransmitters, genetic factors, and food sensitivity. Onset may be triggered by an intestinal infection, or stressful life event. Stress and anxiety can trigger symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome. Learn more from WebMD about the role emotions may play in IBS.

The cause of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is not completely understood. There are possible factors like genetics and prior adverse life experiences (e.g., infection, trauma) that can predispose someone to get IBS.

  • I’ve been studying food for irritable bowel syndrome and found an awesome resource at Stomach oracle omnibus (google it if you’re interested)

  • My doctor thinks I have ibs because all things have been ruled out…. this means I have type 1 diabetes, celiac & now IBS as well as some mental health diagnoses. Really this one is the worst! At least I’m in lockdown at home & have my own bathroom…. cannot imagine being out in the world with this issue godddd

  • This shit has been fuckin with me for 2 years, and idk if its ibs or not. There is a million things that can be said but I feel like anxiety can be a big factor. Whenever I eat something and don’t even think about it while leaving the house it’s like my fuckin body has an extreme awareness and knows that if I’m not near a humble toilet then I’m going to shit myself. The only success I’ve had to leaving the house is to empty my bowels before and not eating anything at all for a day. That way my stomach knows I don’t have anything to digest. But having to make up 2 years of school is tough, I just gotta regain myself and power through honestly. Like I said a million situations and probabilities have occurred to me but when I step out of the house it feels like I can digest food and shit myself in like 10 mins. Smfh

  • This is glorious, I been tryin to find out about “ibs symptoms back pain” for a while now, and I think this has helped. Ever heard of Mackorny Defeat IBS Blueprint (should be on google have a look )? Ive heard some incredible things about it and my mate got excellent success with it

  • Winner of a video, been searching for “best treatment for ibs” for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you ever come across Mackorny Defeat IBS Blueprint (just google it )? Ive heard some awesome things about it and my friend got cool success with it

  • I suffered from IBS for 20 yrs, diagnosed twice, and only recently found out my primary trigger is oats and figs.

Recently, the corona lockdown allowed me to control and observe my diet and pinpoint oats and figs as the fucking culprits, and that caffeine, spices, and vinegar, which I previously thought were my triggers, aren’t triggers but only worsen an already triggered state.

Thinking back, i’d had an episode or 2 after consuming psylium fiber, but thought nothing of it at the time. And oats werent even on my radar because they’re so “healthy”, and was inclined to blame the milk, due to its bad reputation, i poured onto my oatmeal. So, started my unjustified incursions into vegetarianism, veganism, and other food group exclusions, and social seclusion that these lifestyles bring in an attempt to exclude the cause in a shotgun approach.

Oats contain some gluten, depending on who you ask and I wasn’t tested for celiac disease, as that wasn’t a thing back when was diagnosed, but highly doubt it is the cause, because I can eat wheat products, which have higher amounts of gluten than oats without issues at all. I’d had issues with psylium fiber, so unless there is something common between psylium and oats other than fiber, I assume fiber is the culprit.

If I’d noted my previous experiences with psylium fiber 10 years ago and listened to a doctor tell me to limit my fiber consumption 20 years ago, I may have avoided 2 decades of negatively affected quality of life!

I can’t believe oats aren’t listed as suspect and even recommended to IBS sufferers. I don’t think I’m special, and my case is a one off; i cant be the only one with a sensitivity to fiber. I now need to rearrange my diet to foster regularity, as I’m getting less fiber but geez, life is so much better without oats, psylium and figs!

Now sure what the connection between figs and oats and psylium is, because only two of those are high in fiber, at first glance anyway. Maybe someone can enlighten me.

Edit: i just read, figs are high in fiber, so that’s the common factor between all the triggers. There is one other trigger that comes to mind, and that’s sour green apricots, but those will turn most people’s stomachs.

  • Lovely Video! Forgive me for the intrusion, I am interested in your opinion. Have you researched Proutklarton Gold Hour Plan (Sure I saw it on Google)? It is an awesome exclusive guide for getting rid of IBS Symptoms Immediately minus the hard work. Ive heard some great things about it and my work buddy after a lifetime of fighting got cool success with it.

  • I just discovered I have this… I’ve been experiencing symptoms for years but these pasts months I have experienced anxiety attacks for the first time, VERY unpleasant.

  • Thanks for the Video clip! Excuse me for chiming in, I am interested in your thoughts. Have you tried Weyannah Reyharlotte Method (do a search on google)? It is an awesome one off guide for getting rid of IBS and irritable colon Immediately without the hard work. Ive heard some incredible things about it and my cooworker after many years got excellent success with it.

  • I got diagnosed with IBS going into my senior year of high school (now a college graduate). However, not knowing at the time, I did struggle a lot with anxiety and depression since I started middle school and only very recently was medically diagnosed with GAD and chronic depression. Plus being lactose intolerant since my freshman year of high school. Knowing that I had GAD and chronic depression before would have been helpful a lot XD. I ended up being put on meds for about 3-4 years, modified my diet, doing exercises like pilates, and taking probiotics when I can. Now I’m having little to no symptoms unless I’m really stressed out and find myself eating foods again I couldn’t eat when I first had IBS.

  • This is glorious, I been tryin to find out about “ibs symptoms test” for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you heard people talk about Mackorny Defeat IBS Blueprint (do a search on google )? Ive heard some super things about it and my m8 got excellent results with it

  • I get very constipated whenever I eat junk food. My body is so sensitive to sweets. Even when I eat healthy foods I always have to use poop a couple times in the morning u til I get it out. It’s SO annoying.

  • I don’t know if I had IBS but after lunch everyday I’d have to immediately go to the rr and had diarrhea. I’d been skipping breakfast for the past 4-5 years and didn’t think till now that it might have been a trigger. I’m going on a week already of eating a small breakfast and have had no issues.

  • I’m not sure but,if anyone else is searching for irritable bowel syndrome nz try Stomach Oracle Omnibus (should be on google have a look )? Ive heard some incredible things about it and my cousin got cool success with it.

  • I’ve had all of the symptoms for about a year or more now. I’m 17 years old. I had stomach surgery when I was younger (my stomach didnt digest properly and my bladder is very small) so I had to get a cecostemy port to my colon in 2011. I got it taken out in August 2019, because the doctors and I decided I was perfectly fine again. I don’t know if that has anything to do with it, but ohmygosh I’ve had to struggle with this and it hurts. I’ve had to skip trips and stuff because of it. Yes its accompanied by gas too and I dont know what to do. Any advice?..

  • I know its a late comment but I have just cured my IBS… believe me I’ve been down every road over the last five years, dietician, low FODMAP, probiotics, etc… peppermint tablets, nothing helped. I had a colonoscopy some years ago to rule out anything visual, and was diagnosed with IBS. Two years later with symptoms only worsening and anaemia and other problems (vitamin deficiencies) I had another colonoscopy this time with many biopsies taken, and an upper endoscope and then an camera endoscope. Turns out I had active ileitis and many small ulcers and erosions and inflammation from stomach to terminal ileum, (I had reflux as well). NOT just IBS which is a diagnosis of exclusion. So my doctor was thinking Crohn’s. Had more tests specific to that, (fecal for calprotein and blood tests for crohns versus UC) all negative. Anyway, I started on exclusive enteral nutrition, a formula which has no emulsifiers, lactose or gluten in it, which was a bottle of liquid food to drink with added fibre four weeks of only that, then introduced one ‘real food’ meal a day, didn’t bother going low FODMAP as I had one that before some of the products were crap for example giving up milk and replacing with almond milk turned out the almond milk full of emulsifiers which are BAD for your tummy. I just now drink lactose free milk. Before I ate NO fodmap foods and it made no difference. Anything with fibre, even the smallest drink of alcohol just bloated me and made me ill, reflux, bloating, pain one meal out with a few drinks was five days to recover in the bad days. Anyway I can now eat anything I want no more bloating, pain or anything. I have a normal tummy for the first time in five years. There is not much research into Enteral nutrition for irritable bowel, its all been done for Crohn’s and mostly on children because it put Crohn’s into remission, but when I read that it fixes inflammation I thought it suitable because I had inflammation. I felt better within one day of not eating. I think just giving my gut a break from food for four weeks then re introducing food slowly, really helped. I now generally have the enteral nutrition drinks for breakfast and lunch and don’t eat till afternoon/dinner on most days, but Some days I eat three meals and some days only the formula. I can functional like a normally ‘digesting’ person again. I’m waiting for my new but biome tests to come back to compare to the one I had five years ago. I don’t believe in IBS now as some mysterious disease of no known cause. I believe that food and the additives and junk we eat is the problem, as well as gut infections… something is causing all these problems. Stress causes problems of the ‘fast’ tummy, but that’s not IBS. Anyway, it worked for me. I hope someone does research into enteral nutrition for IBS. I was also tested for H Pylori, and of course a colonoscopy assesses any parasite infection etc of which I had none.

  • This is just superb, I have been researching “what to take for ibs” for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you heard people talk about Mackorny Defeat IBS Blueprint ( search on google )? Ive heard some unbelievable things about it and my m8 got excellent success with it

  • can you have ibs without pain? its been over a month i am having motion usually after eating,i have to go to toilet 3-4 times a day. My stool report says “acidic semi solid stool”.

  • Many thanks, I’ve been looking for “alternative treatment for ibs” for a while now, and I think this has helped. You ever tried Mackorny Defeat IBS Blueprint ( search on google )? Ive heard some amazing things about it and my work buddy got cool results with it

  • Does anyone get dizziness along with their GI symptoms? I sometimes get dizzy spells and even like hot flashes (not fever) when these type of bowel symptoms are coming on. These symptoms usually resolve after the bowel movement.

  • Many thanks, I’ve been looking for “best cure for ibs” for a while now, and I think this has helped. Ever heard of Mackorny Defeat IBS Blueprint ( search on google )? Ive heard some interesting things about it and my mate got excellent success with it

  • Well, issues I was having diarrhea(poop use to look very thin like it is squeezed or different than normal diarrhea, it was weird) straight after pooping my stomach use to bloated like a lady who is 7 months old pregnant. It made me feel weak, not able to concentrate, gave me anxiety (panic attacks kinda feeling), sometimes feels like my brain wasn’t getting enough oxygen, my mood been always irritated (which affected my relationship with my parents and my g.f) and skin problems(head scalp also)….. thing which is working for me is CURD (an Indian yogurt kinda thing) which you can make it home there should video on youtube for sure about how to make it(my mum makes it for me). Or if not then drink probiotic it is effective too but I would say curd is the best since it is homemade, cheap, and effective. Yogurt is usually sweet and you might wanna avoid that, bad bacterias like sweetener. Curd itself doesn’t taste so great so you can add some jaggery which is naturally made by sugarcane. Mix it up and eat it. Now don’t eat too much (about under >500g) and you should eat apples and pineapple they are very fiber source… Hope this will help

  • This was great, I’ve been looking for “the symptoms of ibs” for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you ever come across Mackorny Defeat IBS Blueprint (do a google search )? Ive heard some great things about it and my brother in law got cool success with it

  • Nice Video! Apologies for chiming in, I would love your initial thoughts. Have you tried Millawdon Livestrong Way Trick (do a google search)? It is a great exclusive product for eliminating IBS without the normal expense. Ive heard some amazing things about it and my best friend Jordan after a lifetime of fighting got cool success with it.

  • Idk if I have it but I have badly cramps, constipation and diarrhea my stomach hurts a lot this stuff came out the blew so idk if I have it or I’m not I’m so stress about it

  • basically your fucked and modern medical science cant help you but put a shitty ole band aid, how fucking depressing, fuck this universe

  • I have it but the symptoms only seem to appear in the middle of the night while I’m trying to sleep in the form of sharp abdominal pain spread over hours.

    2015 US Dietary Guidelines Critique

    http://www.diagnosisdiet.com/2015-dietary-guidelines-critique/

The DGAC apparently wasn’t aware that the FDA published a report announcing:

“…evidence is strong that there is not a relationship between dietary fiber and colorectal cancer.”1)
You can’t blame the DGAC for not having seen this report yet; after all it was only issued FIFTEEN YEARS AGO.2)
The committee also doesn’t mention the excellent studies conducted in recent years demonstrating that fiber is not helpful for digestive problems, and can even worsen digestive problems. A 2007 review of fiber and overall digestive health concluded:

“A strong case cannot be made for a protective effect of dietary fiber against colorectal polyp or cancer. Neither has fiber been found to be useful in chronic constipation and irritable bowel syndrome. It is also not useful in the treatment of perianal conditions. The fiber deficit-diverticulosis theory should also be challenged.” 3)
A clinical study conducted in 2012 found:

“Idiopathic constipation and its associated symptoms can be effectively reduced by stopping or even lowering the intake of dietary fiber.”4)
    A 2013 review stated:

“Even when used judiciously, fiber can exacerbate abdominal distension, flatulence, constipation, and diarrhea.” 5)
