The findings come from a new update by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics’ (AND) position on vegetarian diets. Many people shun animal products in an effort to live healthier lives, and a certain group follows these practices because they believe it is better for the planet. In fact, becoming a vegan or vegetarian to save the Earth is a top reason people switch their eating habits. After reading numerous articles about the impact raising livestock has on our environment, it has become clear to me that there isn’t a definitive answer to the question, “Is a vegetarian diet better for the planet”.

Most people, myself included, assume a vegetarian diet has a lesser impact on the environment than a carnivorous diet but some studies show that isn’t the case. Research has shown that cutting meat usually means getting more dietary fiber, folic acid, vitamins C and E, potassium, magnesium and unsaturated fat, and less saturated fat and cholesterol. Studies have shown that eating less meat reduces the risk of heart disease and perhaps even type 2 diabetes and some cancers. The study compared health impacts of the global omnivorous diet with those reported for traditional Mediterranean, pescatarian and vegetarian diets.

Adopting these alternative diets could reduce incidence of type II diabetes by about 25 percent, cancer by about 10 percent and death from heart disease by about 20 percent relative to the omnivore. Compare that to the dairy-friendly vegetarian diet, which could feed 807 million people. Even partially omnivorous diets rank above veganism in terms of sustainability; incorporating about 20 to.

  • Plants give me diarrhea. The only reason I found out that plants are poison is by not eating them regularly anymore. When I do eat them I get gas, diarrhea and my hemorrhoids flair up and I break out with acne.

I found an all fruit diet works for me where none others come close. I find a it delicious, loaded with electric energy and high in electrolytes and nutrients without need for salt, sugar or oil. My kidneys are now filtering out sediments and clouds of debris. Before my urine was amber but clear. No filtration was happening and I was stuck in a loop of acid reflux and abdominal pains that led to prostititus pains. I’m on my path. Check out Dr. Robert Morse. He also offers much info for free and there are groups on Facebook doing wonders with fruit and fasting.

You just have to use common sense. Plant based foods will provide fibre and a range of nutrients meat does not.aAlso meat consumption is excessive and very often contaminated with antibiotics used as growth hormones, faecal contamination of intensive farming and slaughtering.   • It’s primarily the food, but NOT just the food. There are many things that affect human health that are overlooked especially sleep, impact of stress, lack of movement/exercise. Food is the most important but not the only factor.

  • 80% of farm land is unsuitable for growing crops. Agriculture is only 9% of greenhouse gasses and only a portion of that comes from animals. Humans don’t have fore-gut or hind gut fermentation so we can’t extract nutrient the way herbivores do. There are over 50 nutrients that can’t be derived from plant products.

  • I always eat vegan since I was born and have always grown alot of my own food organically. I ferment pickle, dehydrate and can for dormant off seasons. I refused to eat any animals because it was sickening, I dont like killing their beautiful personalities and it was not about health at all.   • It’s hardly sustainable. Animals we breed for food will be slaughtered. They would be pests if we left them be. They can’t survive in the wild. Just for the reference I’m a healthy, active, 27 year old with a normal BMI who runs marathons and lifts weights.   • Again, this is why balance is important. Going from one extreme to another only results in higher demand, increased consumerism and then more production which in turn effects the environment. So why not eat meat from sustainable free range sources and reduce the amount, sustainable fish and eat local seasonal veg with a couple veggie dishes per week. Observational studies, especially without sufficient adherence to Scientific Method, having truly diverse and statistically significant number of subjects doesn’t seem that much to ask for. I’m not talking just an equal number of men and women, but different socioeconomic groups, nations of origin, cultural traditions, ethnic origin, level of education, various ages, over TIME.

    Even if we just fix how new studies are reported today, something like this piece, but even more so. For example, there was a time when every T.V. Network had Science editor or regular scientific and medical contributors. Even our local Chanel’s had a Science, Tech and Medical Editor. Without that we raw information reported WITHOUT context.

    For example, either late last year or early this year a study was released that indicated that eating a specific food, and that food eludes me at the moment, I’d have to go back check my notes. Whenever I here of a new study, in just about any branch of science or medicine I read the original study to check methodology, numbers, of start with their Thesis and Abstract, then the conclusion, read the procedure, data. Then read the and scholarly work, in support or denouncing the study and look for standing and other similar research. It sounds exhaustive, but it’s just the way my mind works.

    At any rate, this study read and reported that for the average American, and they should have written it as non-Asian American. If you eat x your likelihood, probability, of developing Stomach Cancer increased 30%. So that is exactly what they reported. But no context. In the U.S. for non-Asian Americans, in men the probability of males developing Stomach Cancer is 1 in 95 and for women 1 in 154, and is THAT PROBABILITY that increased by 30%, NOT an American’s OVERALL RISK. But that’s how they left it hanging out there like that.

    What about the pesticides and fertilizers in plants that you are eating? Most lemons in supermarkets hold a warning about eating the skin, it is forbidden due to fungicides used, and the warning was only added recently.

    What about the erosion caused globbaly by intensive farming? Who will grow organic fruits and veggies for 7.5 billion people? We barely can feed everyone as it is.

    Also, you don;t look so well, doctor, you need some protein, you look starved. What about people that have to perform physical labour, construction workers or anyone that needs meat to get thru the work day?

    I get where you are coming from but my grandma died at 89 years old eating a “paleo diet” of stuff she grew on the farm, and so did her parents and siblings.

  • Part of the problem with RCTs and nutrition, in my opinion, is that nutrition is very much tied to a person’s health. What right do we have to possibly make participants sick or obese (a pattern that can be very hard to break out of) for research purposes? Furthermore, it’s very hard, nutritionally, to compare apples ot apples, figuratively speaking. Is a bag of potato chips equal to a baked potato or mashed potatoes? Can you really lump fruit in with candy or meat? Just from my own experience, I can say I feel a lot better eating fresh fruit so often (now that I live less than 2 miles from multiple grocery stores… instead of being 65 miles away…). Of course, the plural of anecdote isn’t data and I’m sure results vary. Still, it’s hard to see fresh fruit as ‘unhealthy’. Furthermore, I’m sure that not all meat is created equal. There’s a big difference between a boiled chicken salad and fried chicken with fries, for example. That said, I’m sure I’m biased, as likely pretty much everyone is. Full disclosure, I’m vegetarian (in part because I really don’t like writhing in pain for hours on end after eating meat… it’s just not fun for me). Of course I’m going to personally think that a gluten-based diet with lots of fresh fruit and veggies and grains (and the occassional egg or dairy product) is awesome because that’s what I eat, and I do well on it. Clearly, imposing my diet on someone with Celiac’s disease would be a very, very bad idea. I think this is why nutrition science is so difficult. Everyone’s body is different, and one size may never fit all.

  • The major issue here is that plant fats are liquid at body temperature and animal fats are solid at body temperature. It is also that we are not omnivores and they can not be overfed cholesterol and they do not have heart attacks or strokes due to cholesterol. According to biological anthropologists we are starchivores.

  • 1 to 2 per 100,000 still means a lot of people when extrapolating to an entire population. Also, this particular study can’t establish causal link because it’s an observational study however plant based diets are the only diet that has been proven in clinical trials to reverse heart disease and stroke in the dean ornish studies. No other diet has done this in a clinical setting so taking observational studies and clinical studies together you can determine that healthy plant based diets reduce risk of cardiovascular events. The dean ornish studies in particular were a no oil whole foods plant based study and took participants that were already on death’s door from multiple heart attacks in the past. Almost every participant that adhered to the diet didn’t have another heart attack and 60% of those who didn’t adhere to the diet did.

    You need to take all the evidence as a whole, you can dismiss any one single study but when you look at all of them as a whole you can’t deny that plant based diets save lives.

These are simply heavily doctored meaningless figures provided to make ignorant idlers feel better about themselves.

  • Ethical arguments against veganism (partial):

    1. If someone doesn’t feel pain, is it okay for us to break their bones? If not, vegans shouldn’t eat plants either. For example, people born with congenital analgesia cannot feel pain and are far more susceptible to life-threatening injuries than others. Even though they can feel discriminative touch and have normal cognition and sensation. This line of reasoning also provides a definitive answer to the contentious vegan issue of whether or not invertebrates deserve rights due to their lack of nociceptors, which may or may not be a prerequisite for the capacity to feel pain. And who is to say plants don’t feel something analogous to pain as well? Is the scientific and philosophical debate really settled on the matter?

    2. Humans are facultative carnivores in nature. Even if it’s for the simple fact that we absorb our B12 in our small intestines instead of our large intestines in the manner of herbivores and therefore, depend on animal products for our survival. It’s fallacious to classify us as obligate omnivores. Because we could do without plants in our diets altogether but not the other way round. Inuits, Chukotkas, Masais, Samburus, Rendilles, Mongolian steppe nomads are examples of people who historically thrived on all-meat diets. Our bodies were designed to break down meat. Why is something natural wrong, even if it has features that are unpleasant? Should we get rid of gender too since men have unfair physical advantages over women?

    3. Is animal exploitation wrong even when it saves human lives? Is an animal derived medication or organ transplantation non-vegan? If it is, doesn’t it imply that the lives of a few animals are more important than that of a human patient who benefits from them? Is this needless too? Or should we let nature take its course instead? If we should, then why is it wrong to eat meat either? Isn’t it natural too? And if human lives do indeed take precedence over that of animals, why are vegans against animal experimentation as a matter of principle?

    4. How much should a vegan eat in a day? And what should they eat from their already restrictive options? Since cruelty and death is involved in the production of every single fruit, vegetable or grain they eat, shouldn’t they further restrict their options by choosing a mix of those food items that will cause the minimum amount of harm to animals and insects while meeting the daily nutrient and caloric requirements of the most amount of vegans at the same time? For example, shouldn’t vegans avoid fruits and vegetables that depend on beekeeping and the exploitation of other pollinators? Moreover, shouldn’t there be an upper limit to how many calories a vegan could consume in a day depending on their age, height, genetics, sex and employment status? Otherwise, lifestyle choices that lead to either obesity or muscle gain (bodybuilding) cause unnecessary harm to animals and insects since they require an excess of caloric intake on behalf of their practitioners. If we are to enforce these ideal vegan food rationing policies on a state level, doesn’t the vegan discourse devolve into becoming an extension of the broader socialist discourse by default? If the pros of socialism don’t outweigh its cons, is veganism something practicable or even desirable for the common man to pursue?

    5. Meat is required for optimal health. There are nutrients in animals that we simply cannot find in plants. Then there’s the fact that we can more readily absorb essential nutrients from animal products than from plants due to the lack of antinutrients, which in some cases, can be lethal. Plus, animal nutrients exist in a more bioavailable form in comparison to the plant variety. An example would be the disproportionate superiority of retinol over beta carotene in meeting our daily vitamin A requirements, to say nothing of people with poor conversion rates by the virtue of being born with particular BCO1 gene variants. Why should we consume a prohibitive amount of nutrient-sparse food which is time-consuming, uncomfortable and unhealthy due to its high fiber content and can even ruin our guts? Not to mention the added baggage of vitamin and probiotic supplements that come along with the unnatural diet. If health isn’t the most basic of requirements for a happy life, then what else is?

    6. If both plants and animals are off the menu due to ethical considerations, should chemically manufactured food alternatives and nutrient supplements be the future of “food” for humanity? Why should we substitute food with chemical goo when our bodies are best adapted to and have evolved over millions of years to their current state fueled by an omnivorous diet? The potential consequences could be disastrous for our species in the long run.

    7. In the near future, the already existent cultured meat will become commercially available at an inexpensive price for mass consumption. If a human donor can donate a pound of their flesh to feed a small town in the process, why is it unethical to procure it from animals instead? If altruism is a good thing, why are humans to blame for the shortcomings of animal cognition? A portion of cultured pork meant for human consumption can be fed back to pigs as well.

    8. Why should it ever be right to prevent a man from raising his own animals for food? Why should we infringe on individual liberty? Both cultured meat or a supplement aided vegan diet is dependent on big corporations and the expertise of a small, elite group of specialists. Why should people from other walks of life throw their most basic right away to the whims of a powerful minority? If they get to control our bodies, they get to control our policies as well.

    11. If meat is murder, does that make a pig a genocidal maniac to maggots? If someone kills Hitler, they’re not responsible for the deaths of millions of people he murdered as well. In the same vein, if a pig consumes thousands of maggots or a cow consumes thousands of grass plants in their lifetimes, one is only responsible for a single “murder”. On the other hand, if vegans don’t deliberately massacre quintillions of insects by unleashing an arsenal of deadly pesticides upon them to protect their crops, there’ll be nothing left for them to harvest. Is the exploitation of a single cow that will last an individual years or the cruelty inflicted upon thousands of insects by deliberately massacring them with pesticides for a single vegan meal, the lesser of the two evils? And is meat stealing, if we leave the murder part to an untamed predator? If so, isn’t it still better than a vegan meal since it’s at least murder-free? If this sounds like overreaching, then I’d like to put forth the similar example of idyllic but unsustainable veganic farms where predators are introduced as a measure for pest control in order to limit the use of pesticides.

    13. Why is it okay for animals to eat other animals, including human beings, but not the other way round in the vegan worldview? In the absence of a reciprocal relationship under a mutually understandable and agreed upon moral framework, no moral system can exist. Animals can’t form a social contract with humans, nor can plants. Therefore, they’re not worthy of our moral consideration. And if we are to increase our sphere of compassion towards animals, why should plants get excluded in the process? But most importantly, why should animals get to eat their proper diet while we humans get to suffer for a cause that doesn’t aid our survival? Should humans not even be on top of the food chain too, if we’re to take the moral agency argument to its logical extreme? The paradox is that civilization requires mankind to be dominant over other species of animals in order for it to flourish. There’s no such thing as a free space in nature. We cannot extend our animal welfare policies in the absence of civilization or without us being on top. The mere existence of humans is detrimental to animals on a fundamental level.

    14. If vegans really value animal lives, including those of rodents and insects, shouldn’t they adopt a lifestyle that causes minimum harm to them without being outright misanthropic? Shouldn’t they take a more anti-modernization stance in general and be closer to nature like the civilizations of the uncontacted tribes of the world? If not, how is the impact of modernization upon non-human animals not tantamount to ethnic cleansing through population displacement in a human context at the very least? Not to mention the crop deaths, municipal pest controls, uprooting of wildlife habitats, mining and a host of other disasters that come along with it. Isn’t it hypocritical to be vegan while reaping the benefits of modernization at the same time? Is the life of an earthworm or a fruit fly less valuable than that of a cow or a dog? If so, is this a morally consistent position to hold?

For example water, it takes nearly 40L of water to produce 1kg of vegetables, in comparison to the nearly 15,500L of water it takes to produce 1kg of beef. The mass amounts of land we use to produce animal feed for animals that alot of us could eat, we could use that same land to invest in food for ourselves. By evan moving to a mediterranean diet, by 2050 we could reduce 15% of CO2 emissions, which is nearly equal to taking a 1billion cars of our roads.   • Do you know how many cups of lettuce it takes to feed enough pigs to produce 468 calories? Try 930. Simply the most elementary of biology. There is a loss of 90% of energy between tropic levels meaning that every 10 calories of feed that goes towards animals like pigs or cows only results in 1 calorie of consumable meat. Eating the 468 calories of primary producer will always be 10x better for the environment than 468 calories of primary consumer.

I think that when the consequence of people’s actions doesn’t directly effect them, the see no reason to change. However, if people can be taught that their actions now directly effect the world they live in, and therefore their standard of living, things would be different.
