Up to 400 milligrams (mg) of caffeine a day appears to be safe for most healthy adults. That’s roughly the amount of caffeine in four cups of brewed coffee, 10 cans of cola or two “energy shot” drinks. Keep in mind that the actual caffeine content in beverages varies widely, especially among energy drinks.

200 mg of caffeine is equivalent to about: 2.6 shots of espresso; 2.5 8 fl oz Red Bulls; One 5 Hour Energy Shot.5 of a Starbucks Venti Brewed Coffee; 1.25 16 fl oz Monster energy drinks; 6 12 fl oz Cokes; Those Ultra-Sensitive to Caffeine. For those ultra-sensitive to caffeine, it is hard to determine an exact caffeine safe limit. Some people can have one cup of coffee (100 mg-120 mg) in the morning.

List of related literature:

The FDA has imposed a limit on caffeine of 71 mg per 12-ounce serving for soft drinks, whereas energy drinks have been found to contain nonnutritive stimulants (e.g., caffeine and guarana) in amounts that range from 2.5 to 171 mg per ounce (Terry-McElrath et al, 2014).

In aggregate, available data suggest that higher doses of caffeine (above 180 mg/day) have been shown to increase urinary output, perhaps transiently, and that this diuretic effect occurs within a short time period (Passmore et al., 1987).

For example, it might be worth noting that a six-ounce cup of coffee typically has between 77 and 150 milligrams of caffeine, while some energy drinks can reach levels of more than 500 milligrams (Griffiths, Juliano, & Chausmer, 2003).

Caffeine, on the other hand, is the primary active ingredient in energy drinks, and while its content in a six ounce cup of coffee typically ranges between 77 and 150 mg, caffeinated energy drinks can reach 505 mg (Griffiths, Juliano, & Chausmer, 2003).

  • Jesus made a lot of alcohol at a wedding and got people tanked. But, everyone has their struggle. I rarely drink, but I do, like 1 time a month IF that. I don’t like being inebriated incase it becomes “go time”, I wanna be sober if I have to fight in a pinch.

  • A radio host (Wayne Allyn Root?) consoled me a year or so ago. He said that my age group (40 to 65) was the most dangerous people in America. Our children are raised, our house is paid for, our wives are taken care of, we believe in our God and have seen His work in history….if I take you then I win and if you take me at the least you have created a martyr and at best I’ve taken 5 of you.

  • I was going to say something here, but most of you are too young to remember. However, old school “black hats” will relate. Bourbon and hot black coffee fill our veins.

  • In ancient times the priests of fish-god Dagon would dress up in full length fish costumes, now their priests only wear the fish-head hats and have ceased wearing the body scales and tails. In those most ancient of days the priests of fish-god Dagon turned evergreen trees into decorated idols, bowed to the trees and placed presents at the base of the trees. The priests taught people to worship both the fish and the evergreen tree as both were symbols of fertility the evergreen tree remained green and fertile all year around, and the fish was a symbol of fertility for most fish lay great multitudes of eggs. More recently though, the priests of fish-god Dagon stole an obelisk from Egypt and placed the stolen “edifice” in the center of Vatican Square. The ancient Egyptians worshipped the penis as a symbol of fertility for it sparked the creation of life, and they built the obelisks to represent a penis. Now each winter the priests of fish-god Dagon turn an evergreen tree into a blinkin’ idol and place the tree prominently next to the stolen dink at Vatican Square, suitable as both are symbols of fertility. Each winter they fill their churches with the pagan idols. The Catholic Church is a church of pagan fertility worship, and they also worship Mary for her fertility. Some clergy are engaged in cannibalism, this too is another fertility rite, conducted with the belief that this too would result in youth and longevity. For example, Aleister Crowley was a 33rd degree Freemason, he wrote poetry about his “Rite of Spring” in his book called “White Stains”. Crowley would get naked with a young boy, together they would enter into the body cavity of a freshly killed bovine where he would rape and kill the boy, and then eat the boy’s testicles (see White Stains). It is ok for the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon to house the book at their main library, but for me to mention the contents means that I get arrested and tortured at the University of Saskatchewan. See “Mary, Monkey, Sun, Tree and Penis Whoreshippers” on the usenet (aka Google Groups).

  • I watched this video on x0.75 playback speed. It was perfect speed that most people talk. I like that he lectured quickly though. I wish my other professors did that. My favorite style was from a Math teacher so far. It was a speed course in 15 minutes of the topic at hand. He’s like, if that made sense, you’re free to go and here’s the homework assignment. If you need to digest more, stick around and ask questions. We are gonna do the same thing again at a slower speed.

  • I went for 30 days caffeine-free in the late 1980s. Day two and three, I had an intense withdrawal migraine headache, but on day four, I woke up in the morning feeling refreshed and full of energy, ready to start my day.
I used to think that feeling fatigued and exhausted when waking up was normal. Wrong. It’s the caffeine! Yes, you can sleep while on caffeine, but it’s not as restful a sleep as if you were off of caffeine.

  • Am I the only one who wants to know the time frame in which that woman drank 400 mg worth of coffee? 4 cups could also be from 520 to 600 mg according to other sources for the average brew caffeine level. Anyway, if she just hugged 4 cups in a row… Who does that anyway?

  • Didn’t watch buzzfeed for like a week and now it’s just a fat group of random people of every gender and ethinicity in the world. This is the end of days.

  • lawyers and politicians have been doing it for years.
they make up laws so they can debate and get around laws, and make new laws and complicate a simple matter for years and years.

  • Caffeine has been scientifically proven as more addictive than marijuana and labelled as barely addictive yet it is marijuana that is illegal

  • but, if you put Aspartame containing Sweetener in either coffee or tea, Alex Jones says it will make holes in your brain, courtesy Donald Rummy Rumsfeld who was on the board of Monsanto’s company Searle, who has the patents, allegedly Alex says, on that. I read elsewhere,go ahead laugh at Jones if you will, no skin off my scalp, but, that FDA supposedly banned the GMO’d bacteria’s phenalinine containing excrement, that Aspartame is refined from, reported, for 16 years as UNFIT for public.

  • “Real”, “Labels”, don’t people know how to look at reality and know what’s up without experts classifying everything for them….

  • “7-Eleven has more caffeine in New York” that’s a big leap from what they actually showed: 1 cup of coffee from one 7-Eleven had a relatively high amount of caffeine. 7-Eleven owners and employees are not specifically trained on (or pinning their hopes to) brewing consistently good coffee, so I would expect a wide range of variation in caffeine content in 7-eleven coffee, not only between different 7-elevens but even at a single 7-eleven depending on who is working at the time.

  • I must be very caffeine sensitive. I rarely drink coffee, but even if I have one cup in the morning before my workout.. it seems to affect my sleep. Trouble falling asleep, racong thoughts. I think I’m not meant to be a coffee drinker..

  • All of the muscles…… all of the men and their MASCULINE energy………. Koffee WHAT ARE YOU REALLY PROMOTING TO OUR GIRLS?!!!!!

  • I used to love having caffeinated drinks but my cardiologist said to never drink it again because I was diagnosed a very mild heart condition called mitral regurgitation and I also have some kind of perpencity to really low blood pressure. My cardiologist never gave me a real answer as to why I couldn’t have caffeine he just said “the best athletes are only ruined when they consume caffeine then they pass out during a squat and get injured”. Or he would say caffeine lowers blood pressure and blood volume yet every study I’ve looked at shows the exact opposite and I’ve asked why multiple times and I’ve brought up that there’s a lot of studies showing against his words but he doesn’t care and doesn’t listen

  • I’m 51 and I’m in the gym every other day with weights and aerobics. Every weekend I do a 50 miler road bike trip. I laugh at the guys half my age in my office that look like a mountain of mashed potatoes and the only exercise they get is reaching for the Cheetos or the remote. While I agree with the substance part of this, I’m not giving up my coffee or beer. Like everybody, I got vices but this seems pretty minor.

If you ‘can’t function without coffee,’ you’re an addict.
I challenge you you slowly cut down caffeine over a period of six weeks (to eliminate the withdrawal migraine) to zero.
Eliminate all stimulants and depressants from your diet. You’ll be glad you did.

  • Sorry! I gave up drinking in 1976, smokes a little after that. 70 now and I refuse to give up my 20oz cup of coffee each morning.

  • Okay so someone in NY just scooped more than the clerk in San Francisco. To be properly scientific, you need a MUCH more controlled environment. This is BS

  • If someone can completely abstain their lust and surrender it to the Almighty then dare I say no enemy shall surpass them in valor, skill, or endurance. The most dangerous warriors in history understood this. In India they call it “Brahmacharya”. Jesus Christ, Jnanadeva, the Great Gama, and many Saints abstained completely from lust. George Washington experienced this power to a degree as well-aimed bullets could not reach him, Sikh saints would hum their chants peacefully while being boiled alive by [email protected] authorities, and Elizabeth l recieved assistance from the Almighty by learning that terrible storms ravaged the Spanish Armada before they could unite with their allies, all due to their strict abstinence. Lust is a primordial yet misunderstood energy that can be transmuted allowing one to understand firsthand that this world is unreal. All things become possible with Brahmacharya. Just a mere handful of Americans who’d sincerely take this path can save the nation from imminent extinction.

  • What about claims that different methods of brewing have different effects on blood pressure? Does boiled, unfiltered coffee raise blood pressure?

  • I always felt less manly because I quit both alcohol and coffee years ago. Honestly it’s refreshing to see a marine like yourself that did the same.

  • Governments and organization can make anything they want to appear good to be just that. Cause its about money and “productivity”. Ask the Medicine man about his governments favorite legal drug of choice. Caffeine Is terrible for you. Its extremely habit forming, its anxiety in a cup. Caffeine is not your friend its “their” friend. How can you get people to keep consuming mindlessly? Drink some coffee, it only depletes you of vital nutrition your body needs daily. Fuck food, just drink a few monsters, this is the sentiment the mainstream medical establishment has when thinking of you the consumer. Drink enough coffee it will fuck you up, chances are if you have been drinking it since you were a child Like most people you are addicted. Try no drinking it and see how great coffee really is. These doctors will say anything for a buck, they are sad little people with no real back bone to speak the truth. Hitler gave his soldiers meth, the world gives its population a mild form of watered down meth called coffee. Stop drinking coffee and you will go into withdraws that will last a long time and have you itching just a taste. Caffine and osteoporosis go hand and hand, caffeine taxes the body of calcium as people age and they consume more caffeine this has a direct effect on bone density. This is just Caffeine, not to mention the copious amounts of sugar that people add to their already toxic watered down hot meth water. Drink up Sheeple, the lambs need to be lead to slaughter.

  • Plus coffee make you shit, keeps that system clean and regular.

Plus it doesn’t affect sleep at all no matter when I drink it… specially if I had a hard workout. Try to do a 455 pound 3×5 sets of squats, and 295 pound 3×3 sets of chest, then three or four sets of all you can do chin ups and then drink some coffee and tell me you couldn’t sleep… that doesn’t happen.
The next day go and do some 495 pound sets of dead lifts, and some heavy 135 pound sets of press, then move to some sets of cleans and see if you cannot sleep no matter how much coffee you drink….
When you see people fucking around with curls or triceps pulls downs is because they haven’t worked out like this.

I think doctors should recommend this type of lifting to all their patients that complain of “insomnia” or restless sleep or erratic sleep patterns… this type of lifting cures all that shit. Fast.
The first time I hears something similar was when I read a book by some concentration camp survivor titled “The Meaning Of Life” cannot remember the author’s name, but he said that once you got there all silly illnesses disappeared, sleep apnea or insomnia were just lack of physical activity, and once you decided you wanted to do all you could to survive, then sleep was never an issue to even talk about, all people there under horrible circumstances sleep like a rock. He was a survivor and he was a happy man and all that.

So heavy lifting can cure all those issues, and more!! You even have more tolerance of other people’s shit, you just cannot be bothered to fight, even with your girlfriend or wife if you got one. You also fuck a lot better. So drink coffee and see.

    Good luck.

  • I just did the calculation for 3 mg / kg for my body weight. Holy hell that’s a lot of caffeine! For a 220 lb. male (100 kg) that’s 300 mg per day. Which is my upper limit. Who the hell is taking 9 mg/kg???

  • And what about those with ADHD? Seems that until I found a good sleep med, my best sleeps were when I had caffeine, and in fact before I even knew about this trait of ADHD and got a very caffeine heavy energy drink to let me power through a night to work on an assignment (thus removing placebo), I ended up nearly passed out within minutes of drinking it (and I wasn’t so tired that I attributed wrong things, this was meant to remove some of the fog rather than fight off any actual sleep)

  • 36, work outside, hike, do my own videos, lift steel, pipe, ball valves, basically oil field related. Point is I’m round now but I can still hike three miles in my full kit, and still sprint a hundred yards at a time. Learned that at a shooting competition.

  • Starbucks has 20 standard roasts at any given time, not including seasonal and reserves…. so what did you guys order? Yeah, Pike Place is the default, but did you get Willow, Veranda, Sumatra, Komodo, House Blend, Ethiopia? Y’all go through the trouble of going to three different stores, and sending this shit to a lab and don’t bother giving the names of the roasts you got from ANY location.

  • I’m one of those people that abused coffee and now I’m allergic to it. Any good caffeine substitutes? It seems like most stimulants are controlled substances nowadays.

  • In our country I hate it when they sell at our school canteen those energy drinks! Called Sting” and Cobra” even at the elementary school I tried buying a yoghurt drink instead I was offered this Energy drink the Person at the canteen said ” sorry we’re out of that. Would you like cobra???

  • I love your videos. There’s so much ascientific panic about foods, “chemikills”, exercise modalities, pain, etc. and it’s so refreshing to hear your no-nonsense evidence-based takes on these issues. The only downside is needing to control my involuntary eye rolling when people tell me about their latest “detox” or that “good mornings are soooo dangerous” or “you will get injured if you train when you’re sore”.

  • Actually it is facking insipid! They remove all the virtually all the flavour compounds in additon to caffeine as part of the decaffination process. Just have full caffeine in the morning would seem to be the solution here. I like this guys mythbusting about legal drug-sleep interactions though. He’s enlightening anyone that listens to him.

  • After 32 years of marriage my drinking problem left me. I only drank for about eight of those years. Still hoping she’ll come back when she figures things out. I started eating right lost 80 lbs. I’m 180 lb 6 foot tall 56 years old got a six pack above my belt and exercise regularly. Had preps going on for the last 4 years. And I know I’m not going to make the rapture. So I’m going to be here to preach the gospel and kick some ass if I have to.

  • Good video. Would love to see a similar video that discusses post work “recovery” products and if there is any scientific basis that supports spending money on these to improve recovery.

  • No mention of caffeine’s effect on sex hormone binding globulin? It’s hard to trust studies on caffeine considering it’s one of the biggest industries on the planet, don’t forgot the entire world was at one point convinced fat was bad for you.

  • The tolerance aspect was new to me. I always thought backing off caffeine during a deload would help performance once I added it back to my normal training. Thanks J for the great content

  • I’m very happy you are discussing Caffeine and sleep. It’s effects can be very profound but like you said there is some individual variation

  • Wanna get off soda? Slowly dilute it, that’s how I got off it, then I drank only water. I got fit, like made the 300 Spartans look like fatties. Beware soda.

  • Was denied service at a comma md tattoo shop because as a disabled vet can’t wear the mask?? Even offered to wear one and take it down from time to time “I’m not down with that ” he said??? Can you say discrimination??

  • Dark roast coffees have the lowest caffeine and acid levels. The darker they are, the lower the levels. A lab isn’t needed to certify that.

  • Caffeine is overclocking your brain there’s no way it’s good long term. It’s very addictive and mind altering. Puts you out of touch with your true energy levels. Drink away

  • Nice video:-) If you are looking for additional info I recommend you to read this more detailed article: https://www.coffeesamurai.com/how-much-caffeine-is-there-in-coffee/

  • This is right on time. I have a similar testimony in the past with alcohol. I have been aware that i need to reduce and quit the stimulants to function at optimum performance recently. See you on the Battlefield peeps. Psalm 149 4-9

  • Change what you can. Recognize what you can’t. Use the stuff between your ears to survive anything. Improvise, adapt and overcome!!!!
