People who inhale secondhand marijuana smoke may feel the following side effects: burning, itchy, or red eyes dry mouth headache coughing increased appetite rapid heartbeat anxiety euphoria lightheadedness a sensation of time slowing restlessness paranoia tiredness nausea. A 2016 study in rats found that secondhand exposure to marijuana smoke affected a measure of blood vessel function as much as secondhand tobacco smoke, and the effects lasted longer. 82 One minute of exposure to secondhand marijuana smoke impaired flow-mediated dilation (the extent to which arteries enlarge in response to increased blood flow) of the femoral artery that lasted for at least 90 minute. Secondhand tobacco smoke causes an estimated 34,000 premature deaths from heart disease each year in the United States among nonsmokers, according to the U.S. Surgeon General’s 2014 report on the consequences of smoking.

Even advocates for marijuana’s legalization acknowledge that secondhand marijuana smoke can be detrimental to health. Secondhand Smoke Causes Cardiovascular Disease. Exposure to secondhand smoke has immediate adverse effects on the cardiovascular system and can cause coronary heart disease and stroke.2,4,5.

Secondhand smoke causes nearly 34,000 premature deaths from heart disease each year in the United States among nonsmokers. 4. Exposure to secondhand cannabis smoke can impair blood vessel function.

The smoke contains dozens of carcinogens, chemicals, and metals. Secondhand cannabis smoke has a similar chemical composition to its tobacco counterpart. They both appear to increase the risk of cardiovascular events such as stroke, blocked arteries, and heart attacks. Secondhand marijuana smoke contains tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the chemical responsible for most of marijuana’s psychological effects, and many of the same toxic chemicals in smoked tobacco.

6-8. Smoked marijuana has many of the same cancer-causing substances as smoked tobacco, but there are still a lot of unanswered questions around secondhand marijuana smoke. The immediate effects of secondhand marijuana smoke are temporary, but continued and prolonged exposure can turn these short-term problems turn into long-term ones.

Damage done by pot smoke increases your chances of developing hardened or clogged arteries, which can cause a heart attack or stroke. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, secondhand smoke in kids causes ear infections; more frequent and severe asthma. Senior Faculty Editor, Harvard Health Publishing. For years, we’ve talked about the danger to children of secondhand tobacco smoke. It makes asthma worse, increases the risk of respiratory and ear infections — and even increases the risk of sudden death in infants.

Inhaling secondhand marijuana smoke even for just 1 minute may temporarily affect how blood vessels function, according to a new study done in rats.

  • That is a lie that weed is worse than cigarettes. I do believe that it isnt good for your longs dont get me wrong, but people do not realize that weed doesnt have tar and other harmful chemicals like cigarette smoke. As for the IQ accusations, a study was released that if you take 1 advil you will not loose those IQ points. On that subject, please note that you may only loose 2 IQ points for heavy ass use. If u smoke everyday, 3+ times a day then yes, you should see some side affects. And all anti-drug fucktards must also realize that all these studies are biased. If you really wanted to get technical in your belief of a drug free world then look at your foods, look at the beer in your hand, look all around you. Drugs are everywhere.

  • Marijuana is a plant, the plant is natural, God made our world so everything is there for a purpose, God is omnibenevolent (all loving) so he wouldn’t make natural things that could kill, therefore marijuana is good. Marijuana is love, marijuana is life. Therefore illuminati is now confirmed, I rest my case..again

  • Ugh these comments are difficult to read without getting frustrated.  Policy is changing all over the world on cannabis use, telling people “don’t do it, its bad for you” or “doing drugs is stupid” isn’t going to convince anyone.  Smoke is smoke and it is bad for you like the video says.  That being said people who smoke weed every day maybe smoke a few joints.  How much more smoke do cigarette smokers expose themselves to in a day?  They generally get to be pretty old before they stop because of health issues.  Also like she said in the video, there are healthier ways to consume cannabis that I see as virtually harmless.  It isn’t for everyone, some people don’t like it, some people thrive with it.  We don’t try to convince you to smoke, don’t try to convince us not to.

  • They make marijuana illegal because it puts other peoples lives in danger that’s why they have the drinking and driving laws. Sure they may just go a bit too far but it is still very harmful on your body.

  • I do know that marijuana can persist in your system for years.

It is a mind altering depressant.
It can cause apathy, loss of concentration and fatigue.

Now that recreational and medical home use is legal in California.. We ALL are inhaling it whether we want to or not.

We banned use if tobacco smoking in many areas because of its effects on others.

If some want to use marijuana for medical value..or recreational use…
It should be In some other form that smoke.

Because smoke does not comply with “in the privacy of your own home” when it drifts over the fence into my yard and into the breeze coming through my windows.

  • It’s heated plant matter that’s inhaled into the lungs of course it’s going to affect the cardiovascular system. Smoke isn’t air. That’s why most people figuratively ‘hack up a lung’ after a big toke. Common sense.

  • Oh hey that carbon monoxide from the billion of cars driveing around and running is ok… but dare smoke tobacco near me or by a door way

  • I think I feel sick. Legalising a drug like that? I think alcohol and cigarettes should be illegal and these people are talking about legalising a disgusting drug? As someone that has no choice but to inhale it EVERYDAY it’s wrong and harmful. I get migraines everyday. I went to Germany for 3 months and I didn’t have a migraine once that whole time or get woken up with the smells and fumes because I couldn’t breathe. My brothers are druggies and they smoke this shit. For the love of everything dear don’t smoke around other people unless they choose to be around you. GET OUT OF THE HOUSE to smoke. I have a constant cough and constant migraines. The only rest I get from it is when I’m out of the house for long periods of time

  • What’s sad is the more legal it becomes, the more governed it will be. This leads back to Agenda 21 and in with the big chem corps. I never wanted it legal to begin with. You have been manipulated once again. Say hello to the near future new cancer stick. Smh. Wake up please.

  • Ugh of course my family is still fucking up my life my sister does weed in her car and adds in her car sometimes to go to our grandmas house that’s like an hour away also her baby rides with us she’s not even 4 month

And now my mom and her boyfriend are doing it and my whole house smells like it
I’m gonna get cancer AND ITS ALL THERE FAULT

  • Increase the legal limit of THC allowed in the blood. Ontario courts are going to go bankrupt loosing so many cases. Just being in the same room means that you could get arrested with a DUI?

  • You are so goddamn stupid,so many studies have proven that marijuana smoke is not dangerous at all and that it actualy helps your lungs look at Michael Phelps he is the best swimmer in the world and he is smoking marijuana so educate yourselves before you start talking crap

  • I agree smoking marijuana is dangerous but edibles, vaporizers and other marijuana products are safe and fun to do hahaha and “effects” their probably talking about being high

  • I thought we established that smoking anything is bad for you already?

Why don’t they start smoking crack bongs and see if it affects the rats, because that would have just as much relevance to the marijuana debate than this study does.

Jesus, smoking ANYTHING is obviously going to be negative on your body, they need to do some studies with substance if they actually want to make that case against it.

  • It should be allowed, I don’t personally smoke it but there is no negative effects as people usually do it with friends or at home. It’s just like alcohol. Anyway my point being if it was allowed would you be as bothered to smoke it multiple times or only the once. I’m guessing most people would get bored of it within 5 years and yes new people will try it but it makes people’s lives easier as they do t have the shame of being a ‘druggie’ or something else as everyone would be in the same boat. I think it would be a step forward for society.. That’s just my opinion, what are your thoughts?

  • this video is absolutely false, dont believe everything you see and or hear on the internet.they are trying to wig people out about it to make them scared

  • People who claim marijuanna has no negative effects are probably just as ‘brainwashed’ as the people they claim are un-informed. I tried the stuff, its worse than alcohol in MY opinion, its not the weed your parents smoked, shits fucking insanely strong.

  • if it hasn’t harmed anyone ever, then how can it be dangerous to the lungs…. Fuck your ignorance toward such a harmless, beneficial plant

  • that study sounds like the original marijuana demonizing study where they suffocated monkeys with marijuana smoke…
HOWEVER the blood vessel function is interesting and the point is just smoke a joint, don’t try to suffocate yourself you dumb fuck!:)

  • Lol CBS! What a bunch of bullshit! I was there to test that conclusion with the same techniques they said. Not even close. I did a similar test with an artificial lung and a cat in a closed room. Barely a hint of damage. I felt bad for the cat, which was killed that very day for an autopsy. I conquered the results to be bullshit from the start and I was right. SO F OFF!

  • Who would have thought smoking anything could affect the lungs? He said weed has 1000 of chemicals like tobacco, that’s false… Olympic medalists have smoked weed and didn’t notice any decrease in performance. Watch super high me he smokes weed 24/7 for a month and his lungs lost 2% efficiency and it wasn’t even permanent damage.

  • Well I guess I’m gunna start doing edibles from now on. But I’m kinda too lazy to get up and bake something. So ima just continue what I was doing before watching this video. Now that I think about it… where’s my bowl.

  • Okay, I get it. So they’re experimenting on rats by puffing smoke into their lungs for HALF OF AN HOUR. Hmm, I think these people knew about the kind of results they would get prior to the experiment.

  • The way they described that study it doesn’t appear that they added any additional oxygen. Adding just smoke equals no oxygen for the blood vessels to move. This leads to decreased productivity. Try again scientists!

Btw, i didn’t go read the study further then this video so i may be completely wrong on how they preformed the experiment.

  • NOTE: The comment I made about vaporizers being healthier was before liquid vapes became popular. I was referring to simply heating the plant without burning it.

  • I fucking LOVE this study.
For years I have bitched that “If second hand cigarette smoke causes cancer, then second hand marijuana smoke can cause a positive piss test result.”
No one wants to even entertain the theory.  Tobacco bad, weed good.  All the time.  I then was asked to no longer smoke in my apartment, even with the windows open, because “the smoke gets into the heat ducts and affects the other apartments.  But yet, I don’t have any heat vents IN my apartment, I have a self contained gas fire place.  They don’t want their kids to have cancer, but everyone in the house gets high, even those apartments with ventilation ducts, yet nobody complains about the smoke filtering through the vents then.  It is called hypocrisy in deference to rationalizing our personal vices.  Now I have an actual study to point to say, “Fuck you, secondhand pot smoke hurts other peoples lungs just like tobacco smoke.”  I Love It!!!!

  • That study was so fuckin stupid! They hot box a rat for 30mins straight getting it’s tiny ass body higher then FUCK! then of course it’s going to cause problems wtf? That’s like putting a rat in a burning building for 30mins to inhale all the smoke. dumb fucks! Most humans wont be able to smoke that much as that rat Ina lifetime. Haha so calm down ppl just smoke in moderation so it doesn’t controls your life and exercise!

  • Brother, these studies are funded by the Government, NIDA driving, only studying the negative effects, not positive. Plus this burning of cannabis is nothing like tobacco, not even close. Smoking cannabis is not bad for you, that’s a fact, so its impossible for others by way of second hand smoke to get negative effects. makes no scientific sense, there again, this is not real science studies, its government/corporate propaganda. I should know, after a career in the USMC, and other government work, police work, I’m well aware of there bs.

  • One of the bad things about the internet is every idiot can act like a doctor. I’m talking about the comment section. You’re pretty much saying “This is my point of view and any other point of view is wrong!!!!!!!”.

  • Any smoke is bad for you! This is pointless! Wood smoke, cigarettes, weed, cocaine, ANYTHING. You should never be trying to injest smoke. It’s just not good.

  • Smoking is always bad but there’s different ways u can use weed or marijuanah in different ways if there’s no chemicals like added to it it’s fine nothing will happen but smoking is just bad for lungs and smoking makes u cough because it makes ur mouth dries and yeah but it’s not really bad for u vapor is almost the same but if u use E-cigs too much u can get liquid in ur lungs and that causes whatever and just eating weed is not bad unless there’s like really harmful chemicals in it like in wax some people smoke weed with wax

  • Of course the blood function reduced you are suffocating rats while pumping even more then human intake on weed like it would be like if we smoked 15 ounces in 10 mins that’s what it like for them so who would lose blood function you could never overdose but it is estimated that if you smoke 25 pounds in 15 mins you will die but that could never be done obviously and the amount it takes for us to die would be like that on what they are giving the rat just think of how tiny rats are

  • If you want to harm yourself, go right ahead. But why should people have the right to smoke and cause physical harm to innocent bystanders? Your rights should end when they infringe upon my own rights to a safe environment. Also e-cigs are bad for you too.

  • smoking or vaporizing is just a bad idea for everyone.
Freedom is important, you should be able to do whatever you want. Feel free to destroy your own body to your hearts content.
The problem is when your actions hurt other people.
If any person who does not want to breathes in your secondhand smoke or vape, then you are in the wrong.

  • I love the idiots that are like “nobody dies from weed” well if someone died from a heart attack or cancer when smoking weed then it is a high chance that weed did help a lot to kill them you idiots, no smoke you inhale is going to be magically good for you is it? Get off your lazy high ass and get some education, or light a bonfire and breathe in all that smoke because any smoke is good for you right according to you idiots who smoke week?

  • Cool.. ima go for a jog in the park while I breathe in millions of car and factory pollution. But I dare smell smoke! Whatch out!

  • I don’t see how the health risks to Marijuana should affect it’s legalisation. It hurts no one but those who want it to hurt them.

  • if someone stuck you in a tight room and blew smoke for 30 minutes you would die. not from the chemicals but deprivation of oxygen

  • A lot people love weed. A lot of people are against weed. Less harmful than caffeine and cigarettes. Less harmful than alcohol. Most don’t crave it like they would if they got hooked on cigarettes. We can’t easily change someone’s ideas if they grow up believing in propaganda. Not much we can do… People are gonna get high whether it’s legal or not; that’s just the reality.

  • I swear every time I click on a tyt video without realizing the channel first, the second the video starts I click the back button and then remember to click back on the same video so I can go back and dislike it. Anyone else…?

  • I’m glad to see all of the debate about our study. While I don’t plan to dive into a big argument, I did want to quickly answer some questions raised in these comments because I thought the video here was excellent. (1) The assumption that rats were exposed to massive amounts of smoke is incorrect. In fact, the smoke was practically invisible in the clear box in which sleeping rats were exposed to the smoke. (2) The rats were not deprived of oxygen. Physiological tests have already confirmed that our system doesn’t affect blood oxygen level in the rats when used for tobacco smoke. The atmosphere in the box was mostly air and there was a ventilation hole as well. (3) The official exposure period was 30 minutes but most of the exposure took place during the first 10 minutes. Being at a party or rock concert around people smoking joints might expose you to similar levels of secondhand smoke; and smoking it yourself certainly exposes you to far higher levels. (4) Other studies about lung function or cancer are not relevant to this study. We are not aware that anyone has ever studied effects of marijuana secondhand smoke on vascular function before. (5) Lastly, these results are not anti-marijuana; the THC did not cause this effect. Presumably using vaporizers or edible forms would avoid the problems that we observed (this is not medical advice). Cheers all, have a good debate.

  • My neighbors smoking marijuana like a chimney,
I’m not sure if it’s going to affect my drug test when I see my pain management specialist,
How much second hand do I have to be exposed to before it gets into my system?

  • That’s the most retarded claim I have ever heard. Being the one smoking the joint, you are experiencing both first hand and “second hand” smoke.

  • I’m pretty sure inhaling heated plant matter in general is bad for you. Do this same study with lawn clippings and I’m sure you will get similar results.

  • Drugs are gonna hurt you, regardless. Anything unnatural isn’t good for your lungs, but that doesn’t mean it’s not something you should do, everything in moderation:3

  • We should have people for legalized Marijuana smoke and people who are against it not smoke. And see who is more relaxed when put into stressful situations

  • Any smoke is not great to your health whether cigarettes, marijuana or camp fire…. if they outlaw marijuana they will also have outlaw camping. Or give leave it up to each person to decide on what and how much risk they want to take.

  • Smoke is terrible for you. Isn’t it common sense that we shouldn’t fill our lungs with smoke? I don’t even see how smoking is enjoyable, the entire process sounds kind of frightening.
