People who inhale secondhand marijuana smoke may feel the following side effects: burning, itchy, or red eyes dry mouth headache coughing increased appetite rapid heartbeat anxiety euphoria lightheadedness a sensation of time slowing restlessness paranoia tiredness nausea. A 2016 study in rats found that secondhand exposure to marijuana smoke affected a measure of blood vessel function as much as secondhand tobacco smoke, and the effects lasted longer. 82 One minute of exposure to secondhand marijuana smoke impaired flow-mediated dilation (the extent to which arteries enlarge in response to increased blood flow) of the femoral artery that lasted for at least 90 minute. Secondhand tobacco smoke causes an estimated 34,000 premature deaths from heart disease each year in the United States among nonsmokers, according to the U.S. Surgeon General’s 2014 report on the consequences of smoking.

Even advocates for marijuana’s legalization acknowledge that secondhand marijuana smoke can be detrimental to health. Secondhand Smoke Causes Cardiovascular Disease. Exposure to secondhand smoke has immediate adverse effects on the cardiovascular system and can cause coronary heart disease and stroke.2,4,5.

Secondhand smoke causes nearly 34,000 premature deaths from heart disease each year in the United States among nonsmokers. 4. Exposure to secondhand cannabis smoke can impair blood vessel function.

The smoke contains dozens of carcinogens, chemicals, and metals. Secondhand cannabis smoke has a similar chemical composition to its tobacco counterpart. They both appear to increase the risk of cardiovascular events such as stroke, blocked arteries, and heart attacks. Secondhand marijuana smoke contains tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the chemical responsible for most of marijuana’s psychological effects, and many of the same toxic chemicals in smoked tobacco.

6-8. Smoked marijuana has many of the same cancer-causing substances as smoked tobacco, but there are still a lot of unanswered questions around secondhand marijuana smoke. The immediate effects of secondhand marijuana smoke are temporary, but continued and prolonged exposure can turn these short-term problems turn into long-term ones.

Damage done by pot smoke increases your chances of developing hardened or clogged arteries, which can cause a heart attack or stroke. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, secondhand smoke in kids causes ear infections; more frequent and severe asthma. Senior Faculty Editor, Harvard Health Publishing. For years, we’ve talked about the danger to children of secondhand tobacco smoke. It makes asthma worse, increases the risk of respiratory and ear infections — and even increases the risk of sudden death in infants.

Inhaling secondhand marijuana smoke even for just 1 minute may temporarily affect how blood vessels function, according to a new study done in rats.

  • That is a lie that weed is worse than cigarettes. I do believe that it isnt good for your longs dont get me wrong, but people do not realize that weed doesnt have tar and other harmful chemicals like cigarette smoke. As for the IQ accusations, a study was released that if you take 1 advil you will not loose those IQ points. On that subject, please note that you may only loose 2 IQ points for heavy ass use. If u smoke everyday, 3+ times a day then yes, you should see some side affects. And all anti-drug fucktards must also realize that all these studies are biased. If you really wanted to get technical in your belief of a drug free world then look at your foods, look at the beer in your hand, look all around you. Drugs are everywhere.

  • Marijuana is a plant, the plant is natural, God made our world so everything is there for a purpose, God is omnibenevolent (all loving) so he wouldn’t make natural things that could kill, therefore marijuana is good. Marijuana is love, marijuana is life. Therefore illuminati is now confirmed, I rest my case..again

  • Ugh these comments are difficult to read without getting frustrated.  Policy is changing all over the world on cannabis use, telling people “don’t do it, its bad for you” or “doing drugs is stupid” isn’t going to convince anyone.  Smoke is smoke and it is bad for you like the video says.  That being said people who smoke weed every day maybe smoke a few joints.  How much more smoke do cigarette smokers expose themselves to in a day?  They generally get to be pretty old before they stop because of health issues.  Also like she said in the video, there are healthier ways to consume cannabis that I see as virtually harmless.  It isn’t for everyone, some people don’t like it, some people thrive with it.  We don’t try to convince you to smoke, don’t try to convince us not to.

  • They make marijuana illegal because it puts other peoples lives in danger that’s why they have the drinking and driving laws. Sure they may just go a bit too far but it is still very harmful on your body.

  • I do know that marijuana can persist in your system for years.

It is a mind altering depressant.
It can cause apathy, loss of concentration and fatigue.

Now that recreational and medical home use is legal in California.. We ALL are inhaling it whether we want to or not.

We banned use if tobacco smoking in many areas because of its effects on others.

If some want to use marijuana for medical value..or recreational use…
It should be In some other form that smoke.

Because smoke does not comply with “in the privacy of your own home” when it drifts over the fence into my yard and into the breeze coming through my windows.

  • It’s heated plant matter that’s inhaled into the lungs of course it’s going to affect the cardiovascular system. Smoke isn’t air. That’s why most people figuratively ‘hack up a lung’ after a big toke. Common sense.

  • Oh hey that carbon monoxide from the billion of cars driveing around and running is ok… but dare smoke tobacco near me or by a door way

  • I think I feel sick. Legalising a drug like that? I think alcohol and cigarettes should be illegal and these people are talking about legalising a disgusting drug? As someone that has no choice but to inhale it EVERYDAY it’s wrong and harmful. I get migraines everyday. I went to Germany for 3 months and I didn’t have a migraine once that whole time or get woken up with the smells and fumes because I couldn’t breathe. My brothers are druggies and they smoke this shit. For the love of everything dear don’t smoke around other people unless they choose to be around you. GET OUT OF THE HOUSE to smoke. I have a constant cough and constant migraines. The only rest I get from it is when I’m out of the house for long periods of time

  • What’s sad is the more legal it becomes, the more governed it will be. This leads back to Agenda 21 and in with the big chem corps. I never wanted it legal to begin with. You have been manipulated once again. Say hello to the near future new cancer stick. Smh. Wake up please.

  • Ugh of course my family is still fucking up my life my sister does weed in her car and adds in her car sometimes to go to our grandmas house that’s like an hour away also her baby rides with us she’s not even 4 month

And now my mom and her boyfriend are doing it and my whole house smells like it

I’m gonna get cancer AND ITS ALL THERE FAULT

  • Increase the legal limit of THC allowed in the blood. Ontario courts are going to go bankrupt loosing so many cases. Just being in the same room means that you could get arrested with a DUI?

  • You are so goddamn stupid,so many studies have proven that marijuana smoke is not dangerous at all and that it actualy helps your lungs look at Michael Phelps he is the best swimmer in the world and he is smoking marijuana so educate yourselves before you start talking crap

  • I agree smoking marijuana is dangerous but edibles, vaporizers and other marijuana products are safe and fun to do hahaha and “effects” their probably talking about being high

  • I thought we established that smoking anything is bad for you already?

Why don’t they start smoking crack bongs and see if it affects the rats, because that would have just as much relevance to the marijuana debate than this study does.

Jesus, smoking ANYTHING is obviously going to be negative on your body, they need to do some studies with substance if they actually want to make that case against it.

  • It should be allowed, I don’t personally smoke it but there is no negative effects as people usually do it with friends or at home. It’s just like alcohol. Anyway my point being if it was allowed would you be as bothered to smoke it multiple times or only the once. I’m guessing most people would get bored of it within 5 years and yes new people will try it but it makes people’s lives easier as they do t have the shame of being a ‘druggie’ or something else as everyone would be in the same boat. I think it would be a step forward for society.. That’s just my opinion, what are your thoughts?

  • this video is absolutely false, dont believe everything you see and or hear on the internet.they are trying to wig people out about it to make them scared

  • People who claim marijuanna has no negative effects are probably just as ‘brainwashed’ as the people they claim are un-informed. I tried the stuff, its worse than alcohol in MY opinion, its not the weed your parents smoked, shits fucking insanely strong.

  • if it hasn’t harmed anyone ever, then how can it be dangerous to the lungs…. Fuck your ignorance toward such a harmless, beneficial plant

  • that study sounds like the original marijuana demonizing study where they suffocated monkeys with marijuana smoke…
HOWEVER the blood vessel function is interesting and the point is just smoke a joint, don’t try to suffocate yourself you dumb fuck!:)

  • Lol CBS! What a bunch of bullshit! I was there to test that conclusion with the same techniques they said. Not even close. I did a similar test with an artificial lung and a cat in a closed room. Barely a hint of damage. I felt bad for the cat, which was killed that very day for an autopsy. I conquered the results to be bullshit from the start and I was right. SO F OFF!
