Potential Treatment for a Serious Respiratory Infection in Kids. THURSDAY, Nov. 19, 2015 (HealthDay News) An experimental drug shows promise as a treatment for a common and potentially serious illness known as respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).

Currently, there is no treatment or vaccine for RSV, which can be deadly for infants and the elderly. Treatment is symptomatic only: Nasal suctioning as needed and before feeding is helpful in infants. Acetaminophen (such as Tylenol®) is only for pain and fever.

Fluids are always important, even if the child’s appetite is poor. Interventional bronchoscopy uses a bronchoscope to allow minimally invasive treatment for respiratory conditions such as severe asthma and emphysema, and to. Viral Upper-Respiratory Infection – Treatment.

Comfort measures. Nasal suction for infants. Use nasal saline before suctioning to help loosen secretions. To relieve nasal congestion, suction gently with a blunt-tipped bulb syringe before feedings and sleep.

Using a bulb syringe to aspirate nasal secretions may promote drainage and comfort. Lower respiratory tract infection: Consider antibiotics if there are persistent fevers >48 hours and signs of respiratory distress without signs of bilateral wheeze (strong predictor of viral aetiology). What we’re looking for here is pneumonia, and frankly this one of the hardest diagnoses to make in children until it is severe.

In a 2015 trial, 15 treatment of RSV bronchiolitis with AZM reduced overall respiratory morbidity and, in another, 36 decreased the progression to severe lower respiratory tract infection in preschool children.

List of related literature:

Hospitalized children frequently are treated with systemic hydration and O2 via nasal cannula, high-flow nasal cannula, or nasal cannula, and assisted with airway clearance primarily by nasal and/or nasopharyngeal suction.144,145 Antibiotics may be administered to control secondary bacterial infections.

Although many respiratory infections require antimicrobial therapy for optimal management, most outpatient respiratory infections (e.g., acute bronchitis, nasal pharyngitis, cold, nonspecific upper respiratory tract infection [URI]) are caused by respiratory viruses for which antibiotic use is not warranted.

The physician must then make a working diagnosis and initiate antibiotic therapy on that basis, keeping in mind that most pediatric pneumonias are viral and that broad-spectrum antibiotic treatment of viral infection raises a substantial risk of resistant bacterial superinfection.

  • Sir I am suffering from upper respiratory track infection. With advice of General physician (He asume that pain because of allergy due to acedity ) I have taken Antibiotics one by one Starting from Amoxycilline, then Roxythromycine, Azithromycine and finally Augmentin along with antacids and anti alergic medicines. But no use, still I am feeling pain while swallow food. Then after he suggested to consult ENT specialist. He sent me to check Throat culture and CT scan for sinocytis. The reports are negative to bacterial growth and no Cinus in CT scan. So once again he started with anti allergic medicine (Montaigne FX) & Gargling with Betadain gargle. While gargle there is some relief but it’s still pain while swallow, even liquids. What may be the reason?

  • I went to the E.R. on Halloween WITH my 3 y.o. son. Both if us have U.R.I.’s. They checked us in, examined us, gave us x-rays then diagnosed us with U.R.I.’s. Crayz to say that we left there UNTREATED. They gave me 2 Tylenol pills and a shot for pain, but I had no dam pain. My son got NOTHING AT ALL!! NO ANTIBIOTICS OR ANYTHING!!! When I inquired about this and asked why We didn’t receive any treatment they told me that it’s only a virus so they can’t give us anything. Since then, both of us have worsened and our symptoms are even more crayz. Coughing up super green phlegm and incredibly sore throats. They billed our insurance cards and discharged us both. Now we’re sitting here in worse shape than before. I had to go to the store and spend $37 to get meds and STILL we need antibiotics. I live in San Bernardino CA. The name of the E.R. we went to is called “St. Bernardine’s Medical Center. I think I’m gonna file a MALPRACTICE SUIT.
