  • Longevity studies show protein is the biggest problem. Eat a high carbohydrate low protein low fat diet preferably vegan and unprocessed foods. Studies on mice extended life by 40% using starchy staple foods. Caloric restriction actually harmed the high carbohydrate low protein low fat group whereas it benefitted the high protein diet group. The high protein diet group lived dramatically shorter lives due to deaths from many causes (e.g. degenerative diseases plus cancer). High protein diet also made the mice leaner and stronger but again shorter lives. High carb diet made them chunkier due to desire to compensate for lower protein.

  • Im on the carnivore diet one night i counted my calories for a meal I was around 2500 calories, and it was an average meal. I only eat once a day (because im just not hungry) yet Ive lost 19kg with very little excersize. Yet all the stuff “out there” says you need to eat 1500 calories to lose weight. Clearly not all calories are the same. Just for the record, never felt better, stronger etc.

  • Of note: folks with chronic disease (fatty liver disease, diabetes, obesity, hypertension…) are much more susceptible to symptomatic covid19. In the U.S. 94% who died with a diagnosis of covid19 had chronic metabolic disease, which was the actual cause of death. Covid19 just pushed the pre-existing disease over the edge. The annual flu does the same thing to the elderly with chronic disease. Want to dodge future viruses? Eat meals during a limited time window (like 20/4) and food that doesn’t substantially raise blood glucose and subsequently insulin. Additionally, steer clear of nursing homes if at all possible. 50% of covid19 deaths were related to skilled nursing facilities. Many became very ill in the SNF and subsequently died in the hospital. So the SNF deaths are actually higher than data would suggest.

  • Convenience, cost, and for groceries its shelf life. I’d love to have fresh fruits and veggies ready to eat and prepare regularly… but they’re spoiled in a week! I may not have time or energy to cook every single day nor do I want to keep running to the store to get groceries every single week or few days. I don’t have the time. So frozen stuff, canned stuff, and stuff with a long shelf life works for me right now. I may only cook 2-3 times in a week because of my limited time between getting home and bed time after work. I’d hate for all those fresh veggies and fruits to go to waste… I need to make more money in my life so I could hire a personal chef.

  • I got fat after a year of essentially eating just homemade bean and cheese burritos. No added sugar; no added fat. The carbs were in the beans and the flour tortillas, which were also made with vegetable oil. So it’s not just sugar. My girth expanded, increased weight, BMI hitting 29, BP increasing, some numbness in my periphery, a new dental cavity every month, when I had never had cavities…YIKES! (My dentist, a recent USC grad, claimed that he didn’t have a clue!) He just kept pushing fancy expensive fluoride products at me and scratching his head. So I went on keto for a year, 50 pounds melted away, effortlessly, circumference normal, BP back at 114/70, getting my peripheral sensation back, fatty liver receding, etc. IT’S NOT JUST SUGARY SODAS! It’s CARBS of any and all varieties! And when coupled with fat watch out! BTW no cavities since I started my keto diet 11 months ago.Isn’t it crazy that a top-notch recent USC dentist grad didn’t know that? had never heard of Eades Egyptian mummies? Did not understand the correlation between sugars/carbs and dental caries? Huh?

  • Question: Lustig says “if you don’t feed your microbiome, your microbiome feeds on you”. My understanding was that starving carbohydrate eating bacterial of your microbiome starves them out until those bacterial strains disappear. They would then be replace with bacterial that feed on fat and protein instead. Is my understanding wrong?

  • Dear Prof Lustig, your lectures are always mind boggling and this is one of them I was waiting for! Being a diabetologist myself and blindly following so called best practice guidelines for 28 years, I ended up asking myself, whether I am a victim or partner of greatest medical science scam that is going around! I still do not understand why Hippocrates old saying ” Thy medicine is thy food and thy food is thy medicine” is ignored by our medical fraternity. Believe it or not most of my longest surviving patients are on Low Carb diet, I am not sure about their fat intake, despite my advise to be liberal on saturated fat! I would be grateful if you permit me to quote and use some of your slides for educational purpose.
