  • Longevity studies show protein is the biggest problem. Eat a high carbohydrate low protein low fat diet preferably vegan and unprocessed foods. Studies on mice extended life by 40% using starchy staple foods. Caloric restriction actually harmed the high carbohydrate low protein low fat group whereas it benefitted the high protein diet group. The high protein diet group lived dramatically shorter lives due to deaths from many causes (e.g. degenerative diseases plus cancer). High protein diet also made the mice leaner and stronger but again shorter lives. High carb diet made them chunkier due to desire to compensate for lower protein.

  • Im on the carnivore diet one night i counted my calories for a meal I was around 2500 calories, and it was an average meal. I only eat once a day (because im just not hungry) yet Ive lost 19kg with very little excersize. Yet all the stuff “out there” says you need to eat 1500 calories to lose weight. Clearly not all calories are the same. Just for the record, never felt better, stronger etc.

  • Of note: folks with chronic disease (fatty liver disease, diabetes, obesity, hypertension…) are much more susceptible to symptomatic covid19. In the U.S. 94% who died with a diagnosis of covid19 had chronic metabolic disease, which was the actual cause of death. Covid19 just pushed the pre-existing disease over the edge. So the SNF deaths are actually higher than data would suggest.

  • Convenience, cost, and for groceries its shelf life. I’d love to have fresh fruits and veggies ready to eat and prepare regularly… but they’re spoiled in a week! I may not have time or energy to cook every single day nor do I want to keep running to the store to get groceries every single week or few days. I don’t have the time. So frozen stuff, canned stuff, and stuff with a long shelf life works for me right now. I may only cook 2-3 times in a week because of my limited time between getting home and bed time after work. The carbs were in the beans and the flour tortillas, which were also made with vegetable oil. So it’s not just sugar. My girth expanded, increased weight, BMI hitting 29, BP increasing, some numbness in my periphery, a new dental cavity every month, when I had never had cavities…YIKES! (My dentist, a recent USC grad, claimed that he didn’t have a clue!) He just kept pushing fancy expensive fluoride products at me and scratching his head. Being a diabetologist myself and blindly following so called best practice guidelines for 28 years, I ended up asking myself, whether I am a victim or partner of greatest medical science scam that is going around! I still do not understand why Hippocrates old saying ” Thy medicine is thy food and thy food is thy medicine” is ignored by our medical fraternity.   • I love his eloquence and oratory skills. However wikipedia appears to contradict him stating 15% of fructose is converted to glycogen, 25 to 50% is convertes to Glucose, 25% lactate.   • 14:00 OK Robert. I used to do cocaine recreationally in the 80s and I never felt or acted “addicted”. The 80s elapsed and I moved on. Cocaine is not addictive EXCEPT when the night is young and you just want to keep boogying. Once you succumb into the early hours and wake up, you may feel spent but you don’t go searching like “reefer madness” for more cocaine! That’s a CIA/FBI/WarOnDrugs/Made for TV myth! Sugar, on the other hand, is a whole different animal! It can and often does become addictive!   • ok, i eat a ton of processed foods, i ate a ton of snacks over my lifetime, granted my body is not in great shape at all, but not one fat cell (im skinny as a rail), and everything that is wrong either came from too much soda (calcium loss bad), or not taking care of other parts of my body. So these types of “tests” did not include people like me when they looked into what people eat, and have happen to them after (years after).

  • My perspective is a wee bit different. I have taught chem/physics for 25 years. A calorie is a calorie. 1 calorie raises 1 g of water by 1 degree celcius every time (almost). Stop using calories to measure food quality. We don’t do it to amps from a battery. If the battery is used to power my laziness on youtube or myfitness pal, we don’t call them good or bad amps. We just need a way to gauge the health quality of food in a new way and leave calories out of it. Then when you have decided if it is quality, then look at calories.

  • I think this presentation is shaded to push an agenda. At 56:56 rising health care costs are tied to the rise in processed foods. The steepest rise is after WWII. A problem we have with medical care is that starting around that time, there was an increase in what medical care could accomplish. In the 1930’s for instance, people still went to the hospital to die. Get pneumonia bad enough to go to hospital, you’d probably die. Even in my young years, 1960’s-70’s, more people simply died of things like stroke and heart attack because the surgeries and other interventions we have today were not yet invented. Now hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of surgeries and hospitalizations follow events like heart attacks. Of course medical costs have gone up! So, if this doctor wants to dissect the value of each calorie, he also needs to dissect historic factors.

    People live longer today than in the past. Progress or not? Bodies wear out and do not function as good with age. Simple biology.

    IMO it is simplistic to point the finger at sugar only for the rise in diabetes, without looking at other factors. India for instance, as well as China, have past histories of famines. Epigenetics demonstrate some interesting results concerning children and grandchildren of people who survived famines, that descendants are more prone to developing Type 2 diabetes. Nothing is simple but unfortunately when science is simplified, as in this lecture, it is easy to use the simplifications to develop legislation or public policies that effect populations.

    Concerning sugar consumption, a great deal of sugar is consumed in Middle Eastern countries. Tea is frequently sweetened to the consistency of syrup. I did not notice the doctor mentioning any of these countries as being poisoned by sugar. Perhaps those cultures counterbalance sugar intake with home cooked meals. At least in my experience with people from those countries, most meals are prepared in the home from very natural ingredients. I also wonder if the Islamic fasting during Ramadan has overall health benefits that counteract over-consumption or other dietary faults throughout the year.

    My husband, who was much older than me, lived a very healthy, athletic life. He did not like carbonated drinks and I cooked most of our meals from the best natural ingredients available. We lived in a rural area, had a garden, fruit trees and natural meat sources. He was never obese and had no bad habits. He developed Type 2 diabetes in his 70’s. I asked the doctor, what the heck?!? The doctor thought the cause probably had a genetic basis.

    A final for what it’s worth, I did the technical writing on one university study on HFC in the 1970’s. This particular study concerned how rats metabolized HFC. The basic points were, a calorie is a calorie and fructose is a naturally occurring substance. I knew the people doing the research and they were not connected to any specific entity.

    Perhaps a point to be made, an analogy is that anything consumed in excess, even water, can be toxic, even deadly.

    milk was mostly from powder, crumbled eggs were from a big canister already prepared, and the dressing were all too sweat and full with mayo.

    i stopped eating dressing in the US. My favorite was the cottage cheese, which was quite good in my opinion…
    It is a shame that such a wealthy country has so much cheap and junk food everywhere….
