“It’s really a humanitarian crisis that if you suffer from a severe mental illness in this country, you almost need to commit a crime in order to get into the system.” Almost one-third of people. Mental Health Issues as a Driving Force of Crime We’ve known since a 2006 self-report study that more than half of all prison and jail inmates have mental health problems. These estimates represented 56% of state prisoners, 45% of federal prisoners, and 64% of jail inmates. And yet that’s been the message to alcohol and drug addicts. [ STUDY: Mental Illness Not a Driving Force Behind Crime] The law makes mental and behavioral health treatment.

Often after such brutal acts with no clear motive or explanation, the notion of mental illness appears and should an offender have any history of mental ill health, this becomes their driving force. In 2013 The Sunday Mirror splashed “THREE people are killed by mentally ill. As the mental health system continues to refuse to treat the most seriously ill, they become a police responsibility. they could not force him into treatment because he had not committed a crime. Express-Times, 2/22/13.

New York Magazine has credited him with being the driving force behind the passage of New York’s Kendra’s Law and. The truth is that people who suffer from mental illness are not violent, they are not crazy, they are simply human and misunderstood. Ironic to the stigma that follows them, By Reason of Insanity reports that people who suffer from mental illness are actually 2.5 times more likely to be a victim of a crime.

  • I just got baker acted 2 weeks ago I blacked out I just feel lucky I got beaten up and not shot…I got to wake up the next day…RIP to all that have suffered and been killed by police or anyone that may not understand

  • Right off the bat he states vaccinations are not a cause for MH disorders. Wrong. Drugs however are not the answer yet Shrinks prescribe them to children. Whatever.

  • The fact that a mom has to tell her kids that they might get shot just because they are black is absolutely disturbing.

And if someone has mental breakdown, why call the police? I’d call a doctor or something.

  • What gets me is that this kid went to school with other kids. In adult life, an employer doesn’t put up with behavior issues at work, as it’s a waste of time and money, plus brings down morale. But in the public schools, these kids are difficult to place, so many never make it to Special Education. Also, we have inclusive classrooms nowadays, therefore kids with behavior disorders are intentionally kept in regular education classrooms. So sweet innocent classmates deal with this early in life!

  • Watch this carefully. If the wrong officers came to these situations. More people wouldnt be here. The calm you see after the panic wouldn’t exists. Some people are victims of themselves. We need all officers trained for this. And the ones that crack under pressure should be removed from the force as unfit. Just like anyone else that can’t live up to the expectations of there jobs. A small change would make a huge difference. These people don’t choose to be I’ll. Most dont really want to die. The sadness, shame, and failure is unspeakable. Pray for change and understanding. After the rage. Theres mostly pain and confusion. Death is something that can’t be fixed or revirsed. Its a last resort not a reaction.

  • Manipulation, power, and access to money and resources are some of the amplifying causes of the behavioral problems and the increasing epidemic statistics (Species by definition share characteristics essential to the group).
And the placebo effect is in some way related to that because it deals with reaffirmation and needs of the person and the group,  So in a way the social manipulators and egotistic persons, that are affecting society, are being subject to the same placebo effect, but the difference is in the lack of empathy and realization of consequences, due to ‘power’ and ‘authority’ as their primary need.

That is linked by the major need of money that in the current society, with all kinds of rules/laws shaping it, drives and projects further development.

Just ask yourself what happens if you diminish the use of money for every day activities but still get half of things done? money and businesses, and their associated power, are negatively affected.

Why are the good contributions attached to money production only? why are the wrong people rewarded in spite of the obvious detrimental risk attached to their behavior?

Because of social conditioning is the normalizing factor, and is wrongly perceived or called ‘culture’, Once people figure that out, like the placebo effect, it yields a better diagnostic and points to the therapy.

  • Glad to see this Francis guy has a conscience. It seems so few psychiatrists do. They just keep their blinders on and assume everything they do is helping people because the drugs’ efficacy was established in a clinical trial and approved by the FDA.

  • Allen J. Frances Needs to take Major Tranquilisers
That is the only way he will ever learn that they shouldn’t be used on Humans or Animals
I said for over 20 years that I would never want my worst enemy to take Major Tranquilisers
Because even VERY SHORT TERM USE of these poisons can screw your
Brain, Body and Nervous System up for life
If people like Allen J. Frances were to screw up their own Bodies, Brains and Nervous Systems
They would then at least learn what sort of HELP we Patients and Ex Patients really need
To still have a good life.

  • dear allen, also psychiatrists give you medication in 10 minutes. so where is the big difference between them and normal doctor? so the problem also lies by psychiatry. 😉

  • This is one of the dumbest morons in University psychiatrists and CNN loves him but most of the people at CNN are or should be in psychiatrist wards.

  • As long as leaders force police to deal with violent delusional manic mentally ill people instead of forcing them in mental institutions then cops shouldnt be responsible if they feared for their life. They are not trained mental professionals. If mentally ill dont want to stay in hospital even if they are delusional and manic, they are free to leave. My brother did and assaulted hospitalized a man, stole money, damaged two vehicles, and coincidently burned residence down, and arrested all within 2 days of being released from hospital.

  • Why are untrained people with guns allowed to approach the mentally ill at all when they aren’t doing anything criminal? How many police officers are mentally ill as a result of just doing their job? What we have is a failure to bring the people who need help to the people who can actually help them and vice-versa.

  • as someone who has been taken in by the police when mentally unwell, this isn’t how they should have handled it.:(

the high five, the ‘just relax’ should have been ‘it’s going to be okay, we are here for you, we got you bro’ as ‘just relax’ makes it feel like we are over-reacting, are being silly/childish and we will fight back or hide for feeling like we are not being believed. then ‘there’s no point in fighting this’, ugh. no! ‘tonight, this is what’s going to happen and then in the morning we could review this.’ language is everything!!!

  • A lot of people are saying what they should and should not say, what they should or should not do but these people do not have mental illness they don’t know what the Mentally Ill are going through, they’re trying their best to help you not hurt yourself and give them some credit for trying when no one else is trying to do this. There is level of understanding that needs to be had on both sides of the field and this may not be possible. Nobody wants mental illness but unfortunately we live in a broken world. So instead of shooting them down in these comments for incompetency how about saying something they should know, as in you should say this instead of this and know that it will differ in every situation.
