In 2014, a study reported that overweight and obese people who drank diet sodas ate between 90 and 200 more calories of food per day than those who drank regular sodas. Researchers do not know exactly why diet sodas may increase the risk of disease. Some believe that diet sodas might damage blood vessels or cause chronic inflammation. Diet soda is essentially a mixture of carbonated water, artificial or natural sweetener, colors, flavors, and other food additives.

It usually has very few to no calories and no significant. But as I learned previously while analyzing all the ingredients in Diet Coke, the artificial sweeteners in diet sodas (specifically aspartame) will still fuck you up pretty bad: “Even though Diet Coke might not have the calories that a regular Coke does, artificial sweeteners still affect our hormones like insulin in ways that can make us hungrier and reduce the amount of fat we burn. Drinking a reasonable amount of diet soda a day, such as a can or two, isn’t likely to hurt you. The artificial sweeteners and other chemicals currently used in diet soda are safe for most people, and there’s no credible evidence that these ingredients cause cancer.

Some types of diet soda are even fortified with. According to several different studies, even though diet drinks supposedly consist of zero net calories, they can have a lot of negative effects — including weight gain, kidney problems, increased risk of diabetes and increased risk of depression. So if you love diet soda but want to cut your risk of.

Diet soda is not a healthier alternative to regular sugar-sweetened soda. Diet soda does not promote weight loss, contrary to popular belief. Diet soda is linked to higher risk for mortality in some studies, metabolic damage, heart disease, weight gain and other health problems. Pass it on: Diet soda has fewer calories and sugar than regular soda, and some experts say its fine in moderation.

Others point out that diet soda can increase the risk of stroke and metabolic. Diet Mountain Dew may well be the riskiest diet soda because it has the greatest number of questionable additives. Not only does it contain aspartame, ace-K, and sucralose, but it also has more.

Diet soda is calorie-free, but it won’t necessarily help you lose weight. Researchers from the University of Texas found that over the course of about a decade, diet soda drinkers had a 70% greater.

  • Many years ago nutrasweet had a red label (although very small) that said that this product when given to rats produced cancer, then they switched it to “Suitable for diabetics”. You’ve got to be stupid to consume this shit.

    stopped drinking soda from 12 oz (355 ML) cans and now drink
    16.9 oz (500 ml) bottles of soda so we can put the twist caps back on,
    and put half back in the fridge, so we can finish the soda the next day.
    Most people feel obligated to finish a can, once the pop tab is opened.
    Reusing the twist caps keeps a bottle of soda from going “flat”.
    I tend to drink more instant coffee (with milk & no sugar)
    and fruit juice to further reduce my consumption of sugar.

  • None, just because it says no sugar doesn’t mean squat. It’s not sucrose that makes us fat but it is fructose. All artificial sweeteners have fructose. In fact anything that taste sweet is because of the dangerous fructose our liver can’t process fully. Have you ever seen a skinny person drinking diet coke. Becauause my weight one year ago was 220 pounds, and a BF of 16%, I started my diet, BUT drank pepsi max each single day, for a year, give or take a couple of days, with a cheatday every friday. And in one year, I went down to 182 pounds, and a BF of 6%
    I did this while drinking diet soda each day, and a cheatday every friday. And if what you’re saying here is true, (and I understood it correctly) then this should be close to impossible.

    For the record, I only consumed my diet soda with food, I never drank it to quench the thirst.

  • If I were you I’d skip sugar and aspartame to be sure. No diet coke and other artificial trash food.
    Studies are obsoleted and reversed every other month in the field of nutrition. Unless there’s overwhelming evidence like alcohol damaging your brain it doesn’t matter much.
    Also the sugar has to be counted vs your total carbs. Meaning bread, rice and potatoes are effectively also sugar when broken down.
    Not only is it counting towards your daily energy total but inhibits stored fat burning for hours by releasing insulin.

  • Diet soda itself does not cause weight gain. However there are two things about it. All types of soft drinks, flavored water, and sports drinks are high in Sodium. Too much sodium can cause heart problems, bad triglycerides, and water weight retention. Water weight makes you look all puffy and it can cover your muscles and look very embarrassing. Diet drinks can also make you want to eat more ultimately leading to weight gain. In order to lose fat and water weight, you’ve gotta drink lots of water, get enough potassium, and cut down on all types of carbs/sugars and sodium/salt. Sodium and glucose are responsible for holding onto water. Drinking lots of water can actually help you lose water weight because it flushes out sodium. Don’t go over 80 fl oz in a day though.

  • Diet soda gives me an option when I go out to board game nights at a local restaurant with my board game group. It allows me to continue my overall calorie reduction and weight loss. But 95% of what I drink is water. I occasionally treat myself to 1% milk or a gatorade if I have the calories and have been good.

  • Blaze TV host Glenn Beck habitually drank so much Diet Coke, that he became ill from it. I suppose that the combination of aspartame, caffeine, caramel coloring and phosphoric acid can be toxic, when consumed in excess. Personally, I try to avoid all the carbonated soft drinks, and drink plain water as much possible.

  • I used to drink a 2 litre or more of diet cola daily. I had all sorts of stomach issues that immediately vanished when i stopped drinking it. I’d highly recommend cutting it or limiting it. I still have it once a week without the stomach issues though i could cut it completely

  • Diet soda is worse for many reasons but the main big one is because it gives addicts the illusion/fake justification of now being able to drink a bunch of soda because “0 calories” “no sugar”
    Regular soda in small to moderate amounts is fine if it’s not making you enter a caloric surplus (consuming more calories than you burn) when you’re trying to burn some fat

    What’s bad is getting addicted to the “feel good feeling” of drinking soda and drinking it too much and can’t go a day without drinking 6 cans or bottles

  • I cannot drink diet. 30 mins later I’m so hungry I feel like ripping down walls and doors just to get to the food. And it’s usually sugary foods I crave. It amazes me how much it revs up my apitite. So yea, I stick with regular soda. (And for the record I drink on average 68 oz of water every day. So I do get my water intake)

    Do you care that your fat your overweight or that you are literally ruining your body slowly. If you do care then you would easily drop it and occasionally drink soda on a cheat meal maybe once every few weeks or once a month. I personally don’t drink soda at all because I look at it as if I’m stabbing myself in the stomach. Would a sane person ever stab them self, no so I don’t drink coke or pepsi or whatever.

  • Yeah… Here’s some info, I’m well versed in this. So diet Coke uses sucralose and has been for the last 10 or so years. Sucralose is one molecule away from real sugar. It’s basically the sweetness extracted from sugar. It is 500x the sweetness so you can use way less of it to get your effect. And in things like diet Coke or v protein powder, they have their own substance so they can use dictator l sucralose concentrate. Ya know those Splenda packets? That’s sucralose and sugar. I know, sugar?? Yes they use less than a gram of sugar so it has substance in the packet. But if it’s.09 calories you can say it’s calorie free. I hear people constantly say they don’t eat sweetener but drink all kinds of workout supplements and protein which are super sweet and happen to have no sugar.. Ok bro�� you guys, I consume sucralose every single day and I’m in really good shape. I will tell your there is absolute truth to it causing issues to your digestive health. But not from one can a day. You need to be consuming it almost constantly to see negative effects.

  • I lost 80 pounds with diet soda. Didn’t drink water. Drank diet tea too. I got another 80 to go. I’m doing intermittent fasting with water. Finally after years of trying to get used to the taste. I’m finally okay with it. And already in the last year limited soda. I’ve been on and off my diet for months. It’s time to go even harder. Might go back on low carb soon and see if I can reverse diabetes which I haven’t been tested for but my brain fog don’t lie. It’s brutal and the reason I want to get healthier. Slowly but surely learning to eat less processed foods and more fruit and less sugar and carbs.

  • Doctor, I am going to chime in because there is very little definitive evidence against diet soda and I know have all the proof I need. I have been struggling with weight loss for several years despite knowing the power of a ketogenic diet.

    Fed up in 2019, I began the year on a strict low-carb diet and intermittent fasting. Still, even at 16/8, the results were garbage compared to what most people report on such a diet. Pretty soon I started OMAD and saw almost no results.

    One thing I should note: I started each day with 1 or 2 cans of Monster Zero, a non-caloric energy drink sweetened with stevia and sucralose. I should also note that I sweetened my black coffee with stevia (No other sweeteners like dextrose) I also would enjoy Coke Zero or Pepsi Max throughout the day. My mood and hunger would fluctuate throughout the day.

    In September, I decided to cut out ALL sweeteners. Lei and behold: I began to lose weight and felt great on my intermittent fasting low-carb diet. And quickly! To this day, very few sources claim diet soda hinders weight-loss. Most articles propose the idea but no one has come along with actual proof until now. I am the living proof and it’s all the proof I need.

    Likewise, a tumor on my wrist (Which I thought was a bone spur but turned out to be a ‘bible cyst’) disappeared completely after two months. Another growth on my shoulder has diminished greatly and looks like it should also be gone in time.

    People hate on me for speaking out against their beloved sweeteners but I intend to spread the truth. I am happy to answer any questions.

  • hey I’m no muscle builder or anything like that but the day I found out I was diabetic I switched to diet soda my story began ever since I was a 5 year old boy my mother fed me nothing but soda and TV dinners she never made home made meals that where healthy anyways getting back I was always unhealthy as a child and let’s travel into the future about 5 years I am ten I come to the town I currently am in and me and my dad are on our own my father left my father I won’t get into it but I became even more depressed and started to eat more and more un helthy foods so let’s travel into the future about 3 years I am 13 years old and I started to get these feeling of weakness so I went to the hospital and found out I have type 2 diabetes it really hit me hard I started to eat mor and more healthy and drink diet sodas about 6 to 7 months after that I lost a total of 25 pounds and at the time it sounded very good to know that I accomplished somthing that I havnt done for years and it felt really good to know that I have done that so let’s travel about 4 years later where I currently am I am 17 years old and it seems that I havnt lost any but I havnt gained any and it dosnt feel good but it dosnt feel bad either. so my question to you or to anyone who is willing to open up and tell me…………..What do you suggest my next step is?

  • Actually this is somewhat false. There are numerous long term studies that show long term diet soda drinkers tend to have higher risks for heart attack or stroke and they tend to be larger. Now there is nothing in diet soda that seem to suggest it would cause any of these problems. So it may be food choices but it’s far better to simply drink water or natural tea or coffee vs drinking artificial soda.

  • 99% of the people who drink diet sodas are already in bed health. Most are also seriously over weight and all those reasons they have heart problems. If this is you you better long fast and save tour life and fix what’s wrong in your body. I was diabetic, had edema and weighed over 450 lbs. Thanks to Dr. Jason Fung and his books I’m now 190 lbs and no longer diabetic or have edema. I lost 230 in about 9 months.

  • I was diagnosed with diabetes at age 11. Before that I was healthy drinking regular soda. I’ve had diet soda for 6 years then suddenly age 17 developed peripheral arterial disease in the legs. I am now age 37 and can hardly walk a few blocks without feeling lower leg pain after walking a few blocks. Thank you diet soda for ruining my life.

  • I hate diet soda but its way better for me. I have 5 brothers 3 which drank a lot of soda. I switched to diet cause I wanted to lose weight. Started running cause I was getting really fat. One of my brothers got diabetes now he has to inject himself cause of soda consumption. My 2 other brothers got really really fat. And i, I lost a couple pounds. I also stopped eating chips. Been drinking diet soda and I haven’t gained weight, and I drink it a lot. Lost A shirt size 2xl to XL and a pants size 40 to 38. I feel happy.

But I was able to wean off of soda by first replacing it with Apple Juice, then I started drinking coffee with a bit of cream and sugar. Now I only crave black coffee.   • We very seldom drink a whole can of soda with a meal, so we both
    stopped drinking soda from 12 oz (355 ML) cans and now drink
    16.9 oz (500 ml) bottles of soda so we can put the twist caps back on,
    and put half back in the fridge, so we can finish the soda the next day.
    Most people feel obligated to finish a can, once the pop tab is opened.
    Reusing the twist caps keeps a bottle of soda from going “flat”.
    I tend to drink more instant coffee (with milk & no sugar)
    and fruit juice to further reduce my consumption of sugar.

  • Statistically larger people drink an excess of diet soda. The diet soda has not made them the size they are and has not given them the health risks. This is why i believe diet soda is ok to drink in moderation, consuming too much of anything will be bad for the body

  • Honestly i think it just depends on the individual if Diet Soda makes them fat. I drink Diet soda have been for a while now and i drink about 1 to 2 cans a day and i still managed to lose 40 pounds and got down to 8% body fat. It hasn’t affected my mood or my motivation, however I’ve always been a very highly motivated person as for the soda make you crave food cause after all thats what is making people fat they drink the diet soda then crave sugar foods. Get some fucking control over yourself, yes its easier said then done but it can be achieved or if your gonna drink diet soda have it before you eat something or if you know you love sugary foods just don’t touch the stuff. But thats just My opinion i lost weight/fat while consuming 2 diet sodas a day and a lot of other people have too.

  • For a month now I cut all sugary drinks with Diet Coke and have been going to the gym and eating abit healthier, basically eating a salad meal at least once a day. In one month I went from 185lbs to 169lbs, the few muscles I do have are starting to show through my tighter skin especially in the abdominal area. Diet Soda helped me cope with my sugary addiction to drinks, which before I would drink maybe 3-4 cans of coke a day, it might not be the healthiest drink out there but I will say it is far better than just drinking plan Soda.
