A vaccine may successfully turn off peanut allergy in mice, a new study shows. Research from University of Michigan’s Mary H. Weiser Food Allergy Center shows that three monthly doses of a nasal vaccine protected the mice from allergic reactions upon exposure to peanut.
Every three minutes in the U.S., someone visits an emergency room with a potentially life-threatening allergic reaction to food. One experimental treatment called “oral immunotherapy” is confronting allergy dangers head-on, and it’s part of a clinical trial at Stanford University led by immunologist and researcher Dr. Kari Nadeau. Dr. Holly Phillips explores this promising treatment some are calling a cure.
The study results prove that the treatment can protect some children against accidental exposure to or ingestion of a very small amount of peanuts or peanut products.
