Vision Screening. Older children, beginning at three years of age, should have a more formal test of their vision. Until formal vision testing is possible after three years of age, younger children’s vision can be assessed by observation of how they fixate and track objects and by the history of. A: Getting your child’s eyes checked regularly is essential for spotting issues that are treatable when caught early. Kids should be screened three times in the first year, again at 3 and 5 year.

Children need their vision checked at birth, at 6 months, between the ages of 3 and 3 1/2 years old, and when they start school, around the age of 5. From: Tips for Parents of Visually Impaired. Most children have their vision tested before they start elementary school. But Dr. Traboulsi says it’s ideal to have your child’s eyes tested before they start kindergarten or preschool. 2. Consider your family history.

The age at which your child should have their first doctor’s visit may vary slightly due to a number of factors. After this initial exam, it’s important that you continue to have your child tested at least once a year. Many eye conditions can be treated, and even reversed, if caught early. Around age 3½, kids should have eye health screenings and visual acuity tests (tests that measure sharpness of vision) with their pediatrician or family doctor. Around age 5, kids should have their vision and eye alignment checked by their pediatrician or family doctor.

Those who fail either test should be examined by an eye doctor. The latest recommendation is that children have at least one vision screening between the ages of 3 and 5 to detect amblyopia and its risk factors. [See: 10. 3 to 5 years Between 3 and 5 years, a child’s vision and eye alignment should be checked. This may be done by a pediatrician, family doctor, ophthalmologist, optometrist or an orthoptist. Visual acuity (sharpness of vision, like 20/20 for example) should be tested as soon as the child is old enough to read an eye chart.

Ages 3-5: The eye doctor will do a physical exam of your child’s eyes and also do vision screenings using eye chart tests, pictures, letters, or the “tumbling E. Children should have their first comprehensive eye exam at 6 months of age. The then should have their eyes examined exams at age 3 and just before they enter the first grade — at about age 5 or 6. School-aged children should have an eye exam at least every two years if no vision correction is required.

  • Hi Doc, OD Candidate…. very uplifting video that shows the fun aspects of the pediatric eye exam. thank you. Was this little guy an exophore? His UCT was a little hard to see from this angle… What testing is most difficult to perform in the ped’s setting?

  • If you go to an optometrist/eye doctor that still blows that puff of air into your eyes, FIND ANOTHER EYE DOCTOR! This test is to check the pressure of your eyes but is outdated, inaccurate and down right barbaric. Modern doctors use the blue circle test which is quicker and far more comfortable.

  • I got a vision test coming, and I’m going to fail it again. I have new glasses from last years exam and I can’t see out of them. I haven’t been able to see since Sears was in business. I can’t drive at night because I can’t see. I’m ok with really thick lenses. I just don’t know why they can’t get the prescription right.

  • I’m presently carrying out a research on information resources for visually impaired students, i kept seeing 20 this, 20 that in all of my readings, decided to check out videos here on you-tube to understand what all those is about, and this really did justice to my comprehension. Thanks

  • I have started off having troubles with my vision since I was 40. I kept researching treatments for impaired vision and I encounter the vision advancement technique “Tοsazο Zuzo” (Google it). That was 8 weeks ago and I started to observe warning signs of advancement right after fourteen days. It really helps improving my reading…

  • I love going to the eye doctor!! But I also love anatomy. The eyes are one of the hardest working organs in the body. When refractive errors occur they need to be fixed as soon as possible. I ❤️ my !

  • I know you are a pediatric optometrist not an optometrist for teenagers or for adults. I see that u do replied to people answers. If u can answer my question that would be great if not that’s ok. What would happen if a plastic fork hit my eye? Last night at work I was changing the trash outside of my store. It was overflow. So when I lift the trash out of the trash can. A plastic fork did came out of the bag it didn’t hit me. But with my OCD I just wonder what would happen if the plastic fork hit my eye? Even though I do wear glasses when I’m at work.
