Similar concerns regarding inaccurate labeling led the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to issue guidelines advising against the use of the term “greater than 99% accuracy” on home pregnancy tests. For that to be true, a test would have to detect hCG at levels as low as 12 mIU/ml when, in fact, many are in the range of 40 mlU/ml and higher. Many home pregnancy tests claim to be 99 percent accurate. However, home pregnancy tests differ in the ability to diagnose pregnancy in women who have recently missed a period. If you have a negative test but think you might be pregnant, repeat the test one week after your missed period or talk to your health care provider.
Doctors often order these tests to confirm pregnancy as early as 10 days after conception. Some can detect hCG much earlier. A quantitative hCG test (beta hCG) measures the exact amount of hCG in.
