Firmness and Resiliency. The mattress surface should appear firm and even. If you notice any sagging or signs of body contouring, the mattress should be replaced.

To test its firmness, press your hand into the center and around the edges of your mattress. When you remove it, note how quickly it regains its shape. However, it is possible to use a second-hand crib mattress safely. If you’re considering a second-hand crib mattress, check the mattress for firmness and edge support, mold and stains, recalls, third-hand smoke, bed bugs, and allergens.

Use the following list of CPSC crib safety guidelines to decide whether your old crib is safe to use. The mattress should be firm and tight-fitting. If you can insert more than two fingers between the mattress and the sides or ends of the crib, the crib and mattress combination should not be used. There should be no missing or broken hardware or slats.

If you have a drop-side crib, check to see if your manufacturer will provide hardware that immobilizes that side. Every time you change your toddler’s crib sheet, tighten all screws and check. This is not always a bad idea. If you have a mattress that was used for an older child, and is still in good condition, you may well be able to use it.

You know how it has been cared for and where. In a safe crib, the hardware — bolts, screws, etc. — should be firmly secured, with no sharp edges or rough areas and no spots that can pinch or otherwise injure your beautiful babe. The crib’s.

• Make sure there are no gaps larger than two fingers between the sides of the crib and the mattress. • Proper assembly of cribs is paramount Follow the instructions provided and make sure that every part is installed correctly. If you are not sure, call the manufacturer for assistance. One of the study’s supervisors, Ying Xu, said, “Our findings suggest the re-use of an older crib or an extended airing-out period may help reduce infant VOC exposures.” The only catch with that is the fact that researchers noted that older mattresses.

Mattresses are known to release minute amounts of gaseous chemicals called volatile organic compounds (VOCs). These VOCs come mainly from the polyurethane used in the mattres. Mattresses don’t last forever, and one that’s been used for a while might simply not be safe to use anymore. Crib mattresses should be as firm as possible, and if it’s been used over time, this might not longer be the case. They do lose firmness over time, especially if used for years.

  • sids is not about babies suffocating or getting trapped in whatever they have in their crib, it;s about the brain forgetting to send the signal to the heart, so the heart does not beat and the baby does not breathe. instead of this ridiculous video you should have been making awareness about parents needing to take cpr lessons.

  • Easy fix. Don’t vaccinate. Vaccines cause respiratory depression, and sids didn’t exist when my grandma and mom were young mothers. You should see how Indian babies were wrapped up. Sids is just a way to explain vaccine related death. Your video is misleading to many and hides the truth. Vaccines cause babies deaths everyday. Quit teaching this bs. The truth hurts, but is factual.

  • Freak accidents happen no matter how careful you are. ALL my 4 kids had bumpers on cribs, and slept on their tummies. They are fortunate

  • There is no dispute on the data about safe sleeping environments, as well as other measures like smoke-free homes, good ventilation, and placing babies on their backs. I, too, lost a nephew to SIDS, so this is a very personal mission to try to prevent even one more tragedy. And no, vaccines are NOT the cause of SIDS…to this day we fail to understand the causes completely, but CAN do our best to improve our babies’ chances.

  • Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) is the leading cause of postneonatal infant mortality. It is 99.9% caused by vaccines. Some babies were poisoned with fire retardant used in their blankets, but in most cases it’s vaccines. Since the introduction of the hep b vaccine in the USA, the USA has the highest one day old infant mortality rate than any industrialised nation.
The main causes of childhood cancers are vaccines containing aborted fetal DNA & human & animal retroviruses, their carcinogenic contaminants & ingredients & multiple other contaminants.
